"I must have really liked this story of a southern girl during the Civil War because I stayed up late two nights in a row to finish it. India Moody is smart and tomboyish, two things not looked upon nicely in Virginia in 1861. The story develops two themes: India's desire to resist the whaleboned corsets and meek married life that seem to await her and instead go to Oberlin College and the horrors wrought on her family and town by the war. From an adult perspective, parts of the story may seem simplistic, but still it's well told. We see the good and bad on both sides and we feel sorry for the main characters. Despite the title, Sharpsburg (better known as the Battle of Antietam) takes up only a chapter or two of the book, although it's effect on India is profound. Highly recommended to young readers who like historical fiction."

" Excellent historical fiction. This is the story of India Moody, a harness-maker's daughter living in Virginia as the Civil War erupts. It is her story of growing up wanting more from life than the ability to cook, clean and "write thank you letters." India has a talent for science and chemistry, and is tutored by her wealthy godmother's asthmatic son Emory-- who has very modern ideas about what causes disease and how to treat and prevent infections. Neither Emory's nor India's beliefs are accepted. Red Moon at Sharpsburg is also the story of the Civil War -- what war was (and is today) like, how it affects not just soldiers and officers, but the people on both sides in and out of harm's way. Rosemary Wells is a Connecticut resident -- maybe we'll be lucky enough to meet her sometime. "

" Meh-I didn't love the book, and I can't quite figure out why. It may just not have been the right book for me at the right time. It was a well written, vivid portrayal of life during the civil war, highlighting what the opportunities (or lack their of) that were available for women at the time. It also included lots of interesting information about the state of medicine at the time. The book received a star review from SLJ, Booklist, and even Kirkus--so just because I didn't love it doesn't mean that it's not a good book. I wouldn't hesitate to put it on a historical fiction bib--I think it's a good recommendation for middle school students--I think anyone much younger then that would be confused by all of the medical and scientific vocabulary that is included. " This is a story that takes place on Confederate territory during the time of the Civil war. The main character of the story is a girl named India who acts too much like a boy in most people opinions except for Emory Timble. Emory does not fight in the war becuase he researches medicine. Since school is not in session India goes to him for tutoring. After time together the two find themselves falling in love. Once Emory joins the Confederate army India soon realizes that Union or Confederate, every soldier has someone waiting for them back home. By helping the soldier out, India is given a little help which perhaps is the return of a good deed done. "

" I really enjoyed the story of the book. I thought the American Civil War told from the perspective of a southern female was an interesting change of pace. The reason it didn't get five stars from me is because the ending was too abrupt; I needed more closure. "
