"I read a few pages of this book about a week ago, but tonight I sat down after work and read the entire thing. Like I've said about most of the children's lit that I've read lately---this little book was precious. Sometimes it's just really nice to take a break from "grown-up books" so that I can get that warm mushy feel-good state that comes from reading warm mushy happy little children's stories. And that's precisely what this book did for me."

" I thought this has a clever title and picked it up. It would appeal to kids who have enjoyed the Clementine series or maybe the Penderwicks. It's not filled with sunshine and joy though as her parents are dealing with job loss and difficulties in their marriage. The main character does show strength and finds good friends so I think the message is a good one. The illustrations are lovely and the story kept me reading it aloud to my girls. "

" What a fun book, I could not put it down and consequently read it over a 48 hour period. So, so enjoyable. "

" I enjoy Laurel Snyder's writing style very much. Her writing is accessible to many levels and ages; however, probably more girls than boys would like this book as well as Bigger Than a Breadbox. The characters have positive and noble traits, which they need to discover through wishes and magic. I would have loved to have had these books available when I was in fourth grade! "

" Penelope is rich, loved by her mostly-absent parents, lonely, and bored. So she makes a wish at a wishing well that life become more interesting, like in the books she reads. Is her wish what causes her father to quit his job, and the whole family to move to Thrush Junction, TN to a rambling house filled w/ characters, that her mother inherits? "

" Loved PENNY DREADFUL by Laurel Snyder. I love the the characters. This felt a little like Polly Horvath but also a little like some of my favorite books from childhood--A LITTLE PRINCESS, THE SECRET GARDEN, etc. A great fun book all around. "

" Penny had enough money to do whatever she wanted until her father quit his job and they had to move from their mansion in The City, to a teeny-tiny town called Thrush Junction, TN. Her life will NEVER be the same again - thank goodness!! "

" Cute, though not spectacular. Good for voracious girl readers, fans of The Penderwicks, The Railway Children, and other big-family-adventure stories, filled with allusions to classic kid lit. A perfect handsell at an indie bookstore in an upscale neighborhood, or a branch library with those readers. "
