In early May 2005, Captain Tom Tighe and first mate, Loch Reidy, of the sailboat Almeisan welcomed three new crew members, two men and a woman, for a five-day voyage from Connecticut to Bermuda. While Tighe and Reidy had made the journey countless times, the rest of the crew were paying-passengers learning about offshore sailing and looking for adventure. Four days into their voyage, they got adventure—but not the kind they had expected or had any training to handle. A massive storm struck, sweeping Tighe and Reidy from the boat; the remaining crew somehow managed to stay aboard the vessel as it was torn apart by wind and water. Overboard! follows the desperate struggle of the passengers and of the captain and first mate fighting for their lives in the sea.

"Such a tense, emotional book! Right after finishing this, the Perfect Storm movie came on and I watched the first half and turned it off. Too scary."

“The power of Overboard! is much like an Atlantic storm…Through its players we are touched by a collective grace equal to the devastation that strikes them.”
— Steve Callahan, survivor and author of New York Times best-seller Adrift“I was frightened or astonished by every page of this beautifully told story of raging elements and human survival. And then the tale is ultimately and heartrendingly inspirational. You will not be able to put this book down.”
— Dodge Moran, first American to sail solo, nonstop, around the globe“Narrator Malcolm Hillgartner’s urgency never ceases…As repeated attempts at rescue fail, listeners can expect their emotions to rise and fall like the swells destroying the small boat.”
— AudioFile“Tougias has a knack for getting those who go down to the sea in ships (or, sometimes, nearly under it in yachts) to talk to him and for weaving thoroughly absorbing sea stories out of what they disclose to him. Maritime history and adventure fans need this one.”
