Publisher Description

In Ann Aguirre's Outpost, the Freaks from Enclave are back, and this time they're much smarter. Deuce's whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she's a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn't fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight. To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven't changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out. Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols—those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground. The Freaks have grown smarter. They're watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don't intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.

"This book does not disappoint! I am amazing at how well Ann can provide continuity with a character. Deuce is trying to live in a society that she knows nothing about and Ann captures that perfectly! I spent most of the book hating the society but then I realized, this is what it would actually be like. If the whole world started dying, clearly the religious would go back to Puritan ways! Ann 's detail to how a new society would function was spot on. I don't even want to get into Fade and Deuce because that was an emotional rollercoaster!"

Quotes

  • “Dark and wonderfully written. Creating a character like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and trapping her in a world like Little House on the Prairie, Aguirre catches the reader’s imagination. From the first page, you’re transported to a world with monsters outside and Old World society thriving within.”

    — RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)
  • Emily Bauer narrates from Deuce's point of view, and she perfectly conveys the girl's frustration and confusing.

    — School Library Journal

Awards

  • Among longlisted titles for ALA Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adults, 2014

" A good follow-up but not quite as strong as the first book. I feel like not enough happened. I liked the suspense of the ending but I wish more had happened throughout the story, I felt there was too much focus on just the town life. "

" While I really enjoyed "Enclave," I found this to be a disappointing sequel. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped it would be. The plot was pretty stagnant, but did finally start to get a little interesting towards the end. When the third book arrives it should start off strongly at least... "

" I went back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. I like that this did not feel like a middle book, except for the long excerpts from book 1. I already read it, I don't need to read it again. I will likely read book 3, curious enough to see how it ends. "

" I enjoyed the continuing story of Deuce. The first third of the book was extremely repetitive (We KNOW she is a huntress. I don't need to be reminded every other paragraph). I will finish this series, but would definitely not put this on anyone's to read list. "
