Deuce’s whole world has changed.

Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn't fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight.

To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols—those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground. The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.

Listener Opinions

" A good follow-up but not quite as strong as the first book. I feel like not enough happened. I liked the suspense of the ending but I wish more had happened throughout the story, I felt there was too much focus on just the town life. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Dana | 2/15/2014

" Loved it just like I did the first one. The only thing that's bad is that I will have to wait for the third one. :( "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Bethany Foster | 2/1/2014

" While I really enjoyed "Enclave," I found this to be a disappointing sequel. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped it would be. The plot was pretty stagnant, but did finally start to get a little interesting towards the end. When the third book arrives it should start off strongly at least... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Amanda | 1/29/2014

" LOVED it!!! Glad to know more about the Muties (never thought I would say those particular words, hmm). Love to see how Deuce's character is evolving and the insights into Fade. Cannot wait for the third book. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lindsay | 1/22/2014

" I went back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. I like that this did not feel like a middle book, except for the long excerpts from book 1. I already read it, I don't need to read it again. I will likely read book 3, curious enough to see how it ends. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Missy | 1/22/2014

" I enjoyed the continuing story of Deuce. The first third of the book was extremely repetitive (We KNOW she is a huntress. I don't need to be reminded every other paragraph). I will finish this series, but would definitely not put this on anyone's to read list. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Kayla Christmann | 1/17/2014

" This book does not disappoint! I am amazing at how well Ann can provide continuity with a character. Deuce is trying to live in a society that she knows nothing about and Ann captures that perfectly! I spent most of the book hating the society but then I realized, this is what it would actually be like. If the whole world started dying, clearly the religious would go back to Puritan ways! Ann 's detail to how a new society would function was spot on. I don't even want to get into Fade and Deuce because that was an emotional rollercoaster! "

" Second installment seemed even better than the first. Ann Aguirre is a smart, yet unpretentious writer, a rare and delightful combination nowadays. I loved the way she got into Deuce's head. It was good, and I can't wait for the third book. "

" The book had a few slow parts, especially in the beginning. Once it picked up, the book was great! I posted in my review of Enclave the book was about Zomibes. I was wrong - they're Mutants! "
