For six years Noah Galloway has lived with a horrible secret and the fear that his rebuilt life could be shattered at any moment. Now his dread has become a certainty, and he has been arrested for the arson murder of twenty-six people. What he needs now is defense lawyer Andy Carpenter, who most definitely is not in the market for a new client. So Noah plays his hole card: a shared love for Andy’s golden retriever, Tara, and the knowledge of what her life was like before Andy rescued her. Because Andy wasn’t her first owner—Noah rescued Tara first, and when he wasn’t able to care for her any longer, he did everything in his power to make sure that she was placed in the right home: Andy’s. With that knowledge, Andy has little choice but to take Noah on, and he soon learns that the long-ago event that may destroy Noah’s life is only the beginning of an ongoing conspiracy that grows more deadly by the day. Andy will have to pull out all of his tricks to get to the bottom of this cold case turned white hot in the latest in David Rosenfelt’s popular mystery series.

"This story is different than the others in the series (as I recall), because it has some chapters written from the perspective of other characters. That said, it was still a tightly written Carpenter story, where the trial is usually just a vehicle to carry the real plot through the twists and turns created by a creative author."

" I enjoy Rosenfelt's humor and am pulled in by his plots. I've read two others in the series, and this is the best so far. "
— MaryEllen, 2/8/2014" David Rosenfelt almost makes me like lawyers. Of course, he tries not to actually "be" a lawyer in his books so maybe that's why. If you like suspense, humor and justice you don't want to miss this series. "
— Clara, 2/3/2014" Lawyer's Golden Retrievers 1st owner is tried for arson and deaths of 26 people, Lawyer takes the case for the dog's sake. Lots of coldblooded murder, rare minerals, mob and the FBI. "
— Dave, 1/18/2014" He makes me laugh. "
— Peggy, 1/18/2014" As always keeps you on the edge of your seat and Andy's sharp wit is so good! "
— Julie, 12/26/2013" Although Tara isn't really mentioned so much, she is a pivotal character. I love how everything is connected and then all tied up at the end. "
— Carrie, 12/4/2013" This is the first of the Andy Carpenter novels I've read (although I have read 3 other books by this author) -wonderful quirky characters - want to read the rest - "
— Linn, 10/20/2013" Really 3.5 stars. I love the way each new book in the series adds another member to the "gang" - I'm betting we'll be seeing more of the senior citizen computer squad. "
— Andrea, 7/25/2013" David Rosenfelt always does an awesome job of entertaining me. He not only writes a great mystery, but the humor he throws in is just icing on the cake. I LOVE his Andy Carpenter series! "
— Barbara, 3/25/2013" I think I have probably read every Andy Carpenter novel by David Rosenfelt. It is always a good read. "
— Sherry, 1/31/2013" I want to read more by Rosenfelt! Really enjoyed this book - truly a legal thriller in all the best ways. "
— Kelly, 11/28/2012" can't help but like Andy Carpenter! "
— Betty, 7/22/2012" This book may not be the best in the series, but it is as funny and engaging as all the others. A perfect summer read. Recommended! "
— Phyllis, 7/13/2012" i enjoy his books. a few hours of escapist fun w/ humor! "
— E, 5/19/2012" No song/talking from Sam "
— Cathy, 4/24/2012" the man loves golden retrievers so you have to like him. have read him before and found this one to be ok but not great "
— Lori, 2/22/2012" Just love, love his books! His dry wit, observations and dialogue make me laugh out loud. Wish he had a book coming out monthly! "
— Amy, 11/10/2011" Very Good; Continuing character: Andy Carpenter; Andy's client is convinced he's guilty of setting fire to an apartment house killing 26 people some 6 years ago while in a drug induced haze; the lawyer starts looking harder when more dead bodies start to point to a conspiracy
"
— Joe, 10/3/2011" As always, these Andy Carpenter books are a fun read. The dialog is great, great character development, and of course, if you're a dog lover there's Tara. "
— Barb, 9/30/2011" Entertaining and would make a good movie. "
— Nancy, 8/28/2011" Enjoyed it but the plot was very similar to the previous book. Guess I'll have to read this series once a year so I dont remember the similarities. "
— Spinster, 8/24/2011" Not really a dog story. Just shows you how cruel and good people can be to each other. Mystery
"
— Rebecca, 8/23/2011" This is one of a mystery series I enjoy reading featuring Andy Carpenter, a reluctant lawyer (he is independently wealthy and really doesn't have to work, so he only takes cases when he believes the accused is innocent). I enjoyed this book. "
— Nancy, 8/14/2011" I usually love all the Andy Carpenter book but this one a quite a few too many players. You lose the momentum of the book when you're thinking who's this guy, that guy...what's going on? "
— Jackie, 8/8/2011" Andy Carpenter is a facinating character. Quick, fast paced read. Always a twist or two that you can't figure out. "
— John, 8/8/2011" Always enjoy getting back together with Andy Carpenter. Excellent narration by Grover Gardner as well. "
— Janet, 8/3/2011" Although this is quintessential Andy Carpenter, Rosenfelt has started to stretch out a bit. His last stand alone was very different, and here he adds what is becoming the obligatory Homeland Security angle. Plenty of intrigue, some variation in setting, so-so humor - just like eating a candy bar. "
— Herzog, 8/2/2011" taking ARC along for Memorial Day Weekend Reading

Fast reading, three page chapters, a self-deprecating lawyer and a client that is all too ready to plea guilty
A geat supporting cast and plenty of powerful men caught up in a widespread net of blackmail. "
