Of course, most humans are oblivious to this, but Cal Leandros is only half-human. His father's dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares-and he and his entire otherworldly race are after Cal. He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal's dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they've always wanted him...for he is

"In 'Nightlife' the main character is Caliban (Cal) Leandros and his half brother Niko. They share the same human mother, however Caliban has a Grendel for a father. Grendel is what the brothers call the monsters. And Caliban's father's specific breed of monster is elf. These elves are not pretty and serene in the Lord of the Rings kind of way. They're scary, violent, and have been watching Cal all his life. Several years ago the Grendels finally made a move and kidnapped Caliban and killed their mother. Caliban managed to escape from their world and returned but aged significantly older with no memories of what happened between his kidnapping and escape. They've lived on their own since, dodging any Grendel they see and moving from place to place. Cal has always felt guilty about it because he feels like Niko is sacrificing his life to protect his. Niko is incredibly smart and has honed his body into a slick fighting machine. They're currently living in New York city and have been for a while now. Yet Niko spots a Grendel in the park one day and kills him. Neither brother knows if this is a one-time occurrence or a shadow of things to come. Should they run? Should they stay? Perhaps there are some things that these two brothers can't run away from after all. I definitely agree with reviewers that this book would appeal to fans of the Supernatural tv series. I'd highly recommend it to fans of the show but also to general urban fantasy fans as well. There's enough differences between the show and these books not to feel like it's the same thing though. There were a few issues to me with the writing style but over all it had me glued to the pages. There's lots of action and the plot moved at a good pace, but the relationship between the two brothers is priceless. It completely made this book for me. Niko is just a larger than life character and bounced off of Caliban they make a great pair. I think I'm in love."

" This was really a 3.5, maybe a 4. The main reason I rated it down was - perhaps unfairly - because I kept seeing it as an echo of Supernatural, which came out a year before. There were some points where I found it hard to concentrate on the writing, but the concept is interesting and the relationship between Niko and Cal good enough to make me want to read book 2. "
— Hilary, 2/13/2014" If I could give 3.5, I would. Very enjoyable. As others have said, very Supernatural in the brotherly interactions. Not that that's a bad thing. Will check out the next one. "
— Frank, 2/10/2014" This was a very tense and exciting book! I will definitely be reading the next book in the series! "
— Molly, 2/4/2014" EPIC!!!! THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK!!!! CAL AND NIKO ARE THE BEST!!!!!! They are funny, tough, brotherly, and they know how to kick serious Auphe-ass!!! "
— Toni, 1/23/2014" I really loved this book! Caliban and Niko Leandros are characters worth following! I had no idea what the hell a Boogle was, but the world in which Rob Thurman created is one I wish to live in. There are so many twists and creatures brought to life that will just jump out at you. "
— ♥, 1/19/2014" I loved this book. The whole series actually. Cal is great. Cal's snark and bitter anger just make the book for me. I loved the premise of the plot too. Bonus: Robin Goodfellow! "
— Stephanie, 12/28/2013" This is about two brothers fighting the super natural world to stay alive. It is engaging, funny and a great read. Absolutely love this series. "
— Mmp1953, 12/3/2013" Sarcastic main character was too sarchastic after a while. "
— Warwriter, 11/18/2013" A bit rough around the edges, but a funny, enjoyable read nonetheless. "
— April, 10/24/2013" Probably more of a 2.5. I'm interested enough to try the next book. If the narrative gets smoother, I'll persevere. "
— Ann, 9/17/2013" Loved the story but did not care for the narrator. "
— Hpstrangelove, 9/15/2013" LOVE LOVE LOVE this series!!!! "
— Meagan, 5/18/2013" I couldn't do it anymore. I just couldn't read it. Maybe it is the mood I am in, but I just can't read it anymore. The brothers are just so.......sterotypical brothers. "
— Micaela, 7/9/2012" It was okay - the ending was somewhat random. "
— Nathan, 4/25/2012" Funny and nightmarish at the same time. You feel as if you're re-living every terrifying moment with the character. Fast read and never disappoint until the end. "
— bernadette, 1/14/2012" A wonderful new take on the "monsters among us" genre. Cal is snarky, dark and self-loathing but will do anything for Niko. A perfect bromance. :) "
— Crystal, 8/1/2011" Think of the brothers on the TV series Supernatural, but waaaaayyyyyy better! "
— Lee, 7/3/2011" I've read this series before and I absolutely love it. "
— Dax, 5/6/2011" Almost didnt read it to the end. It is not a 1 but it does not deserve 2 stars. "
— Tomaz, 4/29/2011" 3.5 it was easy to put down. But good story and likable characters. I will try book 2 in the series. "
— Ghostchaser, 4/24/2011" Two angstful bishounen brothers fight monsters in New York City. Emphasis is placed on their feelings, especially the brotherly affection they feel for each other.

Not bad for what it was, but not really my thing. "
— Dan, 4/23/2011" really loved this book I the teasing between the brothers I think it made the book
"
— Kindy, 4/20/2011" I loved this! The relationship between Cal and his brother, their world, their own history. I just ordered books 2-6 in the series. Can't wait to continue reading their adventures! "
— Adrian, 4/17/2011" Starts slow, but really takes off about halfway through :) "
— Kevin, 4/15/2011" I really liked the characters, but the book really didn't start to grip me until towards the end. The middle was a bit of a hard slog. saying that though I'm pretty sure I'll give the next one a chance. "
— Caroline, 4/9/2011" Excellent! I was behind Cal all the way. "
— Jonaht, 4/6/2011" So far slow going. I plunged headlong into Butcher and Green's worlds. I'm just not feeling this. I read a few pages and realize I'm daydreaming or thinking about something else, put it down, pick it up a few days later, etc... We'll see. Close to giving up on it. "
— David, 4/4/2011" Picks up after a painfully slow start for an entertaining second-half. "
