Quotes & Awards

  • “The warmth of Irene’s family life (including descriptions of her chef-husband’s luscious food) is the perfect counterpoint to the story’s bleak plot and climate. Best of all is Toren’s rendering of Mama Bird, a mentally ill witness whose spirited description is the main link to the murderer. Many will enjoy this grand addition to the Huss series.”

    AudioFile

  • “One of the more domestic in the dark and violent Nordic crime field…Huss’ investigation delves into the history of the hospital and the local wealthy family who owns it, creating a taut and compelling mystery.”

    Booklist

  • “Tursten does an outstanding job of offering multiple plausible murderers, making this the rare procedural that actually requires the reader to evaluate alibis, motives, and means to solve the case.”

    Publishers Weekly

  • “I couldn’t put down this finely crafted Swedish procedural with its complex story line and heart-stopping climax. In her fourth outing (after The Glass Devil), Huss works intuitively, and her family interactions add extra depth to the novel.”

" I loved this book so much! The story is Scandinavian Noir, my favorite, and this author has added a touch of Scooby-Dooishness (if I may) to a dark and eerie mystery. I can tell you that murders are happening and a ghost may or not be the prime suspect in these killings. Great story, very engrossing and interesting, and I really like the main character Inspector Irene Huss as well. Loved it. "

" Another good inspector Huss opus. Despite being coffee and pizza laden it was an interesting story. Hospitals lend themselves so well to murder and mystery. Infidelity too. "

" Pretty good. I can't help wondering it Swedish detectives (they don't actually call them that in the book) really spend so much time having meetings. It happens in the Wallander books also. "

" I have to stop this one for now. I have picked it up about a dozen times and it just does not hold me at all. The story had potential, but for some reason it just does not deliver. I will keep this on my shelf and try again later and see if my opinion changes. "

" I won this on first reads. It was not a fast paced book by any means. It took me weeks to read it- I never felt eager to pick it up again like I do with other crime dramas. It wasn't a bad book, the story was interesting enough but I definitely didn't love it either. "
