The travellers are impressed by the advanced technology and knowledge of the inhabitants of Bensalem, including their ability to communicate with ships at sea through a sophisticated system of mirrors. Sir Francis Bacon (1561–1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist, author, and father of the scientific method. His works established and popularized inductive methodologies for scientific inquiry, often called the Baconian method or, simply, the scientific method, which still surrounds conceptions of proper methodology today.
