College senior Lily Madison is on her own and desperate to pay for her last semester of school. With nowhere to turn, she makes the difficult decision to donate her eggs to a fertility clinic. Peter Kelly is also a penniless student who supplements his tuition money by visiting a sperm bank. One day, Lily and Pete meet at the clinic and talk about their secret. They agree the clinic gives them an odd feeling, as if all is not as it seems. Despite their obvious attraction, Lily and Pete go their separate ways.
Nineteen years have passed and Lily often wonders if she has a child somewhere in the world. She also thinks a lot about Pete. Now a wealthy entrepreneur, Pete never forgot Lily either, and when he sees her in an airport one day, he falls for her all over again. But while they enjoy their unlikely reunion, a story on the news has them riveted. Two teenage boys are missing and their disappearance may be linked to the fertility clinic Pete and Lily visited in college. In a shocking twist, one of the boys looks exactly like Pete.
Lily and Pete are now determined to find out what really went on at the clinic all those years ago. When the whole story comes out, the truth will be more than they bargained for. But they will discover that letting go of their secrets from the past is the best way to build a future worth fighting for.…

"Really enjoyed this book took me less than 12 hours to read it as I just couldn't put it down. Would highly recommend."
— Debbie (5 out of 5 stars)
" The story itself was intriguing and very good, but the dialogue was stilted and bordered ridiculous. I'd give it a 2.5 if I could. "
— Rhonda, 2/20/2014" Lame. Really. Felt very disjointed and things just fell into place way too easily all the way thru. Big disappointment. "
— Lori, 2/9/2014" not my kind of book. "
— Ihutch2000, 2/7/2014" This book was completely different then I thought it would be. The old adage to never judge a book by its cover holds true here. Although it was more than a little disturbing, ultimately I enjoyed it, although I would have liked more resolution at the end. "
— Sonia, 2/2/2014" Stopped reading at page 79. Just couldn't get into this one. "
— Katie, 2/1/2014" good book, but I would have liked more on Lily's offspring not just Pete's "
— Alisha, 1/28/2014" Wow, I do not like her writing style. Conversation between characters didn't work for me in the beginning, little character development throughout. She rushed things, without bridging the gap to make me believe that what was happening was the next logical step. "
— Angela, 1/26/2014" This was a good story, I have read other reveiws that say it is unrealistic. It's a book meant to be a portal out of reality. I really enjoyed the story "
— Michelle, 1/12/2014" My mom loved this book, but I just thought it was so-so. Wasn't bad, but wasn't great. "
— Monica, 1/5/2014" Perfect book to read while passing time in hospital - predictable but interesting. "
— Mae, 12/10/2013" This was an extremely poorly written book and horribly painful to read. I was disappointed as the book jacket synopsis held such promise. I will likely never read another book by this author again. "
— Tracy, 11/2/2013" Couldn't finish it and I rarely stop reading anything. The whole plot just didn't seem believable and there was no chemistry developed between the characters. It reminded me of some cheesy sci-if that my husband would like to watch. Didn't seem to be in my romance genre. "
— Nancy, 10/19/2013" Good read - I cried "
— Beckie, 8/27/2013" This book could have been wonderful. Instead it was difficult to get through. Good beginning, good ending, but what was in the middle...needed some work. "
— Di, 6/1/2013" Did not like the way the story or the relationships developed. I will not read this author again. "
— Allison, 5/26/2013" I'm not a fan of Fern Michael's books, but the storyline for this one sounded interesting. Alas, it wasn't. The plot seemed forced, the situations way too unreal, and the characters were flat. I lost interest after 40 pages and gave up. "
— Debbie, 5/23/2013" Not the best. A happy ending though. "
— Shauna, 3/20/2013" Interesting plot concerning sperm banks "
— margaret, 2/6/2013" As always she has wonderful animal characters, but the story line was to unreal, got threw the whole thing. Not one of my favorites she's done better "
— Val, 1/5/2013" Finally a book I was able to finish. A totally different subject matter to make a story from. "
— Derla, 12/18/2012" This book has kept me on the edge. Fern knows how to capture and hold you attention and interest. "
— Lucy, 12/2/2012" interesting concept, but unbelievable at times. Simplistic investigative abilities uncovers a government selective breeding testing lab? A stretch. "
— Glenn, 11/19/2012" Finished it for the sake of just getting over with it. Silly plots and romance. Blah! "
— Evelyn, 11/11/2012" It was a fun read by a little too cheesy! "
— Rosalie, 8/10/2012" Terrible, had to give up on it... No depth at all and predictable. "
— Penny, 4/23/2012" Awesome book, i couldnt put it down. there were a few strange scenes, but other than that i ive it 5 stars. "
— Roxana, 4/16/2012" Fun read - not much effort involved. "
— Pat, 10/27/2011" Interesting premise for the story! "
— Nicole, 5/3/2011" While the story itself is good, it was poorly written and the reader was terrible. I may have enjoyed this book more if I had read it instead of listened, although it wouldn't have gotten more than an extra star because of the poor writing. "
— Jennifer, 3/13/2011" Different story line but enjoyed it. "
— Judy, 3/13/2011" Finally a book I was able to finish. A totally different subject matter to make a story from. "
— Derla, 2/25/2011" It's hard to believe this is a #1 author on the New York Times Best seller list.
Story is not plausible, corny from start to finish, should be on the science fiction shelf. "
— Lynne, 12/18/2010" It was an o.k. book but unrealistic and predictable. I do not recommend it. "
— Amedina, 10/11/2010" An easy listen to which I enjoyed. Easy to figure out where things were going, but still enjoyable. "
— Wendy, 10/1/2010" This was okay, I didn't get swept up by it. "
— Paula, 9/30/2010" Kind of an interesting book, about "college donors"; trying to make ends meet during school.

Easy read, fun to read "
— Betty, 8/24/2010" listened to the audio version. thought it was poorly read. the men's voices were awful. The story is too far fetched. There are too many elements thrown in. "
— Barbara, 8/7/2010" Premise was interesting, but I spent the entire book fighting the writing style, the impossible leaps of knowledge and author interruption -- everything editors and critique partners have said were bad form. "
— Morgan, 6/28/2010" Apparently the default is guilt over donating to a sperm or egg donor bank...who knew? "
— Shawna, 6/23/2010" A mystery but with a different story line. Pretty good. "
