" Jo Boaler is definitely an evangelist when it comes to her ideas regarding math education. She is very good about keeping a very upbeat and optimistic tone about the capacity of all students.
This is great if you want a sales pitch on a problem solving approach or group curriculum. It falls short in two areas. First, it is not completely intellectually honest when it comes to "studies". Second, the amount of actionable material or ideas for teachers is limited. It does have several excellent resources that it recommends. Third, much of this book piggybacks on the success of Mindset by Carol Dweck. There are many references to Carol's work and in many ways it reads like a companion volume. In someways you could think of it as a companion volume to Mindset, as in Mindset applied to mathematics. Except in goes in a different direction and would seem to infer that only certain approaches and techniques are valid. I do recommend Mindset and if you plan read this book, it will be helpful if you have read Mindset first. "
