" The author creates one-dimensional characters who are cliches of suburban life. I wondered why he bothered to write about characters for whom he had such apparent contempt, or why he imagined the reader would care about them. The plot was shallow and, for the most part, predictable. It would not have taken very much imagination to create characters with more humanity and depth than the ones in Little Children, but the author doesn't seem interested in doing so. The book seems written for the sole purpose of reaching what the author conceives as a dramatic ending. "
