"The last book I read by this author was "The Big Dig" and I didn't think it was that great. Since this one was nominated for an Edgar, I decided to give her another chance (and I really liked her earlier books.) This one had a good plot and I liked how it developed the characters. But if you haven't read the other Carlotta Carlyle books, don't start with this one. You won't have any clue what is going on."

" I can't recommend this book to anyone not already familiar with the series as it is mostly an interlude or epilogue to the previous story. Great chance to revisit with Carlotta and the rest of the gang of characters, but a lot is left unsaid as well. "
— Patty, 1/21/2014" A seemingly random case turns into winding trail of murder, deceit and politics. Carlotta and Mooney separately and then together solve the mystery. The story drags at times and the ending was only semi-satisfying. "
— Jill, 1/18/2014" I had been waiting for months for this book to come out! When the email came that it had come in at the library for me I was so excited! And I was not disappointed. As usual, I loved the continuation of character development, the local flavor (since her books are set in Boston), and her twists and turns. Definitely worth the wait!!! "
— Tracy, 12/26/2013" A sound mystery that's well-crafted, with plausible twists and motives throughout. "
— Jessica, 12/24/2013" I'm partial to Boston-based mysteries as it's fun to be able to visualize the different locations in the book. I also think the comparison to Sue Grafton is accurate, though I think Ms. Barnes does a slightly better job at minimizing the cookie-cutter plot outline to her stories. "
— Christina, 11/19/2013" Female ex-cop and her old partner solve a crime that is about the Mafia and Indian Casinos. Dull and very predictable. I gather there are several Carlotta Carlyle books out there, but can't see myself reading them. "
— Loretta, 11/18/2013" A solid mystery series that takes me back to living and working in the Boston Area. "
— Trish, 10/6/2013" I love this series and this might be my favorite. "
— Sandra, 10/5/2013" Carlotta #12 "
— Ellen, 9/30/2013" A Boston P.I. and ex cop takes on some murders related to a land acquisition of a Mass. Indian tribe and reasseses her commitment to a mob lover. Lots of twists and turns and interesting characters. "
— Betty410, 6/14/2013" Might not work well for someone unfamiliar with the series. the solution was somewhat of a letdown to me. "
— Margaret, 6/9/2013" I always forget how much I enjoy these mysteries with Carlotta Carlyle until I remember to read the next one. Awesome "
— Krystal, 5/31/2013" A fast read mystery with her main character Carlotta Carlyle- an ex-cop who is now a P.I. Went fast and easy. Will look for her others. "
— Jegdsw, 2/13/2013" I like this series and was delighted to see another one made into an audio book after so many years of silence. the story is a bit long but Carlotta is a great character and Barnes' description of Boston is spot on "
— Sharron, 1/25/2013" another mystery series that's fun...Boston PI who drives a taxi on the side. It was a fun read - lots of twists and some major changes for Carlotta. Interesting insights into Indian casinos. "
— Joanne, 10/31/2012" Another author I used to read and am now rediscovering. The stories are set in and around Boston. She's good at drawing memorable characters. Her heroine had a hard time choosing between two fabulous men (oh, the hardship) but in this book she finally makes a choice. I think I'm done with her. "
— Mysteryfan, 6/20/2012" Good book-didn't enjoy it as much as the one before it, but the ending of this one more than made up for it. "
— Deneen, 1/29/2012" Servicable. "
— Ray, 10/16/2011" Loved it! I personally could not put it down. I have read every book in the series and look forward to each and every one. "
— Cindy, 2/28/2011" Another enjoyable book in the Carlotta Carlyle series. Great ending. "
— Diane, 1/5/2011" Audio book and with the reader it was hard to distinguish the male/female characters of the book. "
— Melanie, 12/17/2010" I have read other books in this series, although not all of them. I like them but don't search them out. "
— Barbie, 11/15/2010" Always like Linda Barnes and no exception with this one. Plot involved issues with casinos on Indian land on Cape Cod. Also, her personal life made a not exactly unexpected change, but nicely portrayed. "

— Cindy, 6/2/2010" I enjoyed this book much more than Heart of the World - maybe because of the definition in Carlotta's life. "
— Eunira, 11/25/2009" A Boston P.I. and ex cop takes on some murders related to a land acquisition of a Mass. Indian tribe and reasseses her commitment to a mob lover. Lots of twists and turns and interesting characters. "

— Krystal, 9/25/2009" "if you lie down with the devil, you wake up in the dark." You think someone who dates a mafioso would understand that he is not necessarily a good catch!! "
— Wendy, 8/25/2009" Good book-didn't enjoy it as much as the one before it, but the ending of this one more than made up for it. "
