"[audio] First in a new-for-me woman detective series. C. J. Critt narrated which may be why I'm grouping Carlotta with Stephanie Plum (not as ditzy or sexy or funny, but just as strong a cast of character), Kay Scarpetta (strong, self-reliant, not as driven), and Judge Deborah Knott (no court room scenes and more of an ensemble). Others have compared her to Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone but more rounded, "real" person, not just a case history and Laura Lippman's Tess Monahan (but Carlotta is not as tortured as Tess and gets a lot more fun out of life. I gave the rating on faith: the library CD was in such poor shape I missed quite a bit of the story... Strong sense of Boston, Jewish/Irish background, pets play a role. Former policeman and sometime cab driver, Carlotta inherited a house from her aunt where she lives with her aunt's parakeet and her cat Tom and rents a room to artist Roz while trying to make a go of being a private investigator."

" Pretty well written dective story. I have been reading the Janet Evonovich books and this one reminded me of her writing, without all the anxiety...kind of a breath of fresh air, but still very interesting and a page turner. "

" It's been a couple of years since I read this but I liked it so much I very quickly read my way all the way through the series. Carlotta is a complicated woman with an even more complicated life. She's smart, tough and keeps on getting it when others would have quit. These are definitely worth reading. Absorbing, fast-paced and exciting. Good stuff. "
