The first science fiction written by a Black woman, Kindred has become a cornerstone of Black American literature. This combination of slave memoir, fantasy, and historical fiction is a novel of rich literary complexity. Having just celebrated her 26th birthday in 1976 California, Dana, an African-American woman, is suddenly and inexplicably wrenched through time into antebellum Maryland. After saving a drowning white boy there, she finds herself staring into the barrel of a shotgun and is transported back to the present just in time to save her life. During numerous such time-defying episodes with the same young man, she realizes the challenge she's been given: to protect this young slaveholder until he can father her own great-grandmother. Author Octavia E. Butler skillfully juxtaposes the serious issues of slavery, human rights, and racial prejudice with an exciting science fiction, romance, and historical adventure. Kim Staunton's narrative talent magically transforms the listener's earphones into an audio time machine.

"Fast paced and sucks you right in. I read this with a vengeance and thirst I never exhibit when dealing with books revolving around slavery. The conclusion of what we all wait for wasn't exactly what I was expecting but a quick jolt back into the more realistic notion of what I should've been expecting. Despite its delve into time travel and the questions of how it all can alter the present/future it was still a good reality check about how it was, how it can still be and how some things simply were what they."

“One of the most original, thought-provoking works examining race and identity.”
— Los Angeles Times“In Kindred, Octavia Butler creates a road for the impossible and a balm for the unbearable. It is everything the literature of science fiction can be.”
— Walter Mosley“Octavia Butler is a writer who will be with us for a long, long time, and Kindred is that rare magical artifact…the novel one returns to, again and again.”
— Harlan Ellison" Great plot. Wasn't what I was expecting. Some parts were hard to read, for it was a big reminder of how cruel people could be and such a shameful time in our history. "
— Tamara, 2/17/2014" More of a 4.5. Excellent book. Intense and heartbreaking. "
— Christine, 2/17/2014" We read it in class and i got sucked in from the begining! I felt Danas pain when she explained the situation when she would be attacked. I winced and almost sweated! it was soo good from begining to end! i loved all the characters even though some were complete asses! check this book out! you're mossing out! "
— Uriel, 2/7/2014" Amazing, necessary reading. LOVED IT! "
— Vanessa, 1/27/2014" Loved it...this book will stay with you for a long time. So great on so many levels...the other 5 star reviews say it all. "
— Amy, 1/25/2014" This is my second time reading this book, and now I remember why I liked it so much the first time. The development between Dana and Rufus really fascinates me, and the way that author writes it is superb. I really love the last 3-4 pages- before the epilogue- and it sort of grabbed at my heart. Definitely a wonderful read. "
— Sasha, 1/21/2014" Very cool genre. Kept me going the whole time. Not sure I was in love with the ending, but not sure I have an idea for a better one. "
— Courtney, 1/9/2014" This book has always resonated with me ever since I read it in the 8th grade...it takes the meaning of kindred to a whole new level. "
— Latishia, 1/8/2014" It was a well written book but the time travel nature to the book threw me for a look at first. Trying to keep everything straight was a little work at the beginning. "
— Heidi, 12/30/2013" This is a very unique book , that gives a heartbreaking & fascinting look at slavery. It was a completely different way to tell the horrors & reality of the times. "
— Heather, 12/10/2013" Such and original concept and extremely well written! "
— Meesha, 12/5/2013" I like stories of people placed in a time other than their own. I really liked this book about a 26-year-old black woman who went back in time to the early 1800s, where she met her slave ancestors and became a slave herself for a while. "
— Nancy, 10/30/2013" This was an interesting twist on time travel. I look forward to reading more from this author "
— Jan, 10/6/2013" I gave up on this book. I tried to read this right after I finished reading 11/22/63, because I wanted another time travel story. My advice, skip Kindred and go for 11/22/63. "
— Tracy, 8/25/2013" Octavia Butler did a fantastic job slowly introducing and transporting me back to that awful, brutal period of slavery in America's south. I can still ask a lot of why's and how's but the story is just too engaging to bother with the trivial technical details of time travel. "
— Rafiq, 8/20/2013" This was a book I read because it was my student's summer reading assignment. I loved it. It was an entertaining book that showed the lives of slaves in the late 1800's. "
— Kelly, 8/10/2013" Very good read. I enjoyed how how the main character, an African-American successful business woman deals with the Antebellum South back in the 1800's. It may be science-fictiony, but it is more about the interaction/dialog between the white young boy and this woman. Highly recommend. "
— Gregorio, 5/13/2013" Brutal and honest......loved it! I liked the way Butler made me feel the emotions Dana and Kevin experienced. I wanted Dana to change history but then realized she couldn't or she would change her very existence. I loved this author - want to find more from her. "
— Cole, 2/18/2013" so, I just started this book last night. and I can't. put. it. down. If you haven't read it, do so! It took me a bit to get into it, but now I can't stop reading it and yet don't want it to end. I read 4-6 books a week, and rarely right reviews unless a book just knocks me over. :) "
— Julie, 12/15/2012" Such a powerful book! Interesting concept, going back in time to save a relative, which of course saves you as well. "
— Marjorie, 10/4/2012" Was a bit reticent when I started reading. Yet, got into it quickly and found I couldn't out it down. An amazing story that gives the reader a sense of what it must be like to go back in time to a place where the things we take for granted simply aren't options. "
— Neil, 8/1/2012" I liked this book but I'm not big on time travel, science fiction, etc. "
— Nora, 9/6/2011" I loved it. I didn't think I would really like this book and thought I probably wouldn't finish it. But it sucked me in right away! "
— Erin, 5/23/2011" I am not sci fi fan but found this book to be very engaging and enjoyable read. The main character is strong and vulnerable and the premise of the book is thought provoking. "
— Saundra, 5/22/2011" Here a black wife with a white husband goes back in time to the days of slavery. It forces both the protagonist and her husband to re-examine their views on race. "
— David, 5/19/2011" More of a 4.5. Excellent book. Intense and heartbreaking. "
— Christine, 5/17/2011" Interesting for what it attempts to do, but beyond concept, this book really fails to deliver. Start with the more sci-fi Butler first, rather than have this be the opening experience with Butler. "
— Eric, 5/13/2011" The time travel of this book didn't deter me, as a matter of fact I felt like it kept the book interesting. It kept the book moving constantly. "
— Goffacat, 5/12/2011" Octavia has a way of pulling you and making the character jump out the page at you. You care for her characters. "
— Carmenaton, 5/9/2011" It was a well written book but the time travel nature to the book threw me for a look at first. Trying to keep everything straight was a little work at the beginning. "
— Heidi, 5/7/2011" I loved this book. It was beautifully written. It was about love, racism, sacrifice and responsibility. I couldn't put it down and I was hunged on all her work since. I met Butler and a book reading/signing and she was very interesting. She is/was my favorite author & have been missed. "
— Rae, 5/2/2011" I liked this one, but did I "really like it?" Probably. But I just gave NIGHT by Elie Wiesel 4 stars so this gets 3. "
