Philip Van Doren Stern (1900–1984) was an American author, editor, and Civil War historian whose story “The Greatest Gift” became the basis of the classic Christmas film It’s a Wonderful Life.
James Stewart (1908–1997) made his film debut in The Murder Man (1935) with Spencer Tracy. He was loaned to Columbia for two Frank Capra films that proved pivotal in his career, one of which was Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), which brought him his first Oscar nomination. The other film, It’s A Wonderful Life (1946), has become a Christmas classic. His final acting assignment was to provide the voice of a character in the animated feature An American Tail: Fievel Goes West in 1991.
