From the author of The Abortionist’s Daughter, a gripping new novel about a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon that changes the lives of everyone on board.Meet Peter, twenty-seven, single, and looking for a quick hookup; Evelyn, a fifty-year-old Harvard professor; and Ruth and Lloyd, river veterans in their seventies. There’s Mitchell, an overeager history buff with no qualms about upstaging the guides with his knowledge. There’s Jill from Salt Lake City, wanting desperately to spark some sense of adventure in her staid Mormon family; and seventeen-year-old Amy, so woefully overweight that she can barely fit into a pup tent, let alone into a life jacket.Guiding them all is JT Maroney, who loves the river with all his heart and who, having made 124 previous trips down the Colorado, thinks he has seen everything. But on their first night, a stray dog wanders into their campsite, upsetting the tentative equilibrium of this makeshift family. Over the next thirteen days, as various decisions are second-guessed and sometimes regretted, both passengers and guides find that sometimes the most daunting adventures on a Colorado River trip have nothing to do with white-water rapids, and everything to do with reconfiguring the rocky canyons of the heart.

"I really enjoyed reading this book, it is a simple story focusing mainly on the different characters, although i did find part of it a bit far fetched. I think the main reason I enjoyed it so much was because of all the memories it brought back for me of my trip through the canyon."
— Emily (4 out of 5 stars)
" Great characterization. I felt like I was with them on the whole trip. The end a bit contrived but slighlty surprising. Quick read. "
— Laura, 2/18/2014" I probably gave it a higher score than I would have normally, but it reminded me a lot of the fun trip I had last year down the canyon. "
— Becky, 2/15/2014" Enjoyable story and cast of characters, and having rafted the Grand Canyon some years ago, I appreciated the memory jog. Makes we want to do it again! "
— Nancy, 2/12/2014" Great book. One of those can't put it down ones. About a white water rafting trip down the Colorado River. The characters are all very real people. Makes me realize I will never do one of those trips! "
— Carol, 2/1/2014" This was a quick, fun read but not the best-written or most complex book I've read. It was a page-turner, though, and made me feel as if I were on a raft trip! "
— Diana, 1/30/2014" An interesting character driven book with plenty of action to keep you turning the pages. It made me want to go on a river rafting trip. Although I wouldn't want this much drama on my vacation. "
— Amanda, 1/28/2014" This was a book with an interesting premise...almost like going along on the trip without getting we! While I enjoyed the desciption of rafting the river (since I have never done it) I found the book to be predictable. "
— Marybeth, 1/26/2014" I couldn't finish this book. It was just not my cup of tea. But, I gave it three stars because the descriptive writing and the vocabulary is marvelous. The plot just didn't strike my fancy. It is one of those books that I think you have to be in the right frame of mind to read. I will keep it on my To Read list and perhaps come back to it in the future. "
— Kathy, 1/24/2014" Good book for a rainy public holiday read. A real page turner that tells the story of a group of strangers thrown together on rafting trip through the Grand Canyon and what happens to them during their 13 day adventure. "
— Jane, 1/16/2014" Improbable combination of problems on the rafting trip but an easy fast read. A good change of pace after a more tedious book. "
— Judy, 11/28/2013" Not great literature, but if you've ever dreamed of rafting the colorado through the Grand Canyon, this is a very interesting fictional account of a 2 week excursion. "

— Lona, 8/8/2012" This was written by a Colorado author so I wanted to read it this summer. It was a bit slow paced and predictable but was entertaining while driving to Missouri. "
— Sandy, 7/23/2012" Not amazing literature by any means, but a easy, fun read. Though this particular trip down the Colorado had some (a lot) of mishaps, it's still a trip on my bucket list! The character study was interesting, and I definitely know people that fit most of these roles. "
— Amandajane, 6/6/2012" Gripping enough character studies to keep one reading, but predictability wins out in the end. "

— Amy, 2/4/2011" It was quite the adventure white water rafting down the Colorado. I am sure some of us have been on trips or at least wished we had not been on trips with some of the people like these. I think that reading this book cured me from taking this two week long trip. "
