Eleven-year-old Tilly Martin is dragged from her suburban bedroom. Her mother, Cora, pleads for mercy but the kidnappers are clear: If they don’t get their $5 million back in five days, Tilly dies. If anyone contacts police, Tilly dies.

Journalist Jack Gannon’s estranged sister, Cora, disappeared without a trace decades ago. Now she is frantically reaching out to him for help. Cora tells him about the shameful mistakes she’s made—but she guards the one secret that may be keeping her daughter alive.

A twenty-year-old assassin, haunted by the faces of the people he’s executed, seeks absolution as he sets out to commit his last murders as a hired killer.

In the US and Mexico, police and the press go flat out on Tilly’s case. But as Gannon digs deeper into his anguished sister’s past, the hours tick down on his niece’s life and he faces losing a fragment of his rediscovered family forever.

" This was the first Rick Mofina book I'd read. I liked the way Mofina wove all the different parts of the story together. I had difficulty putting the book down. I will definitely be reading more Mofina books. "

" This was a book that I probably never would have picked up on my own. My mom brought it to me while I was in the hospital. I thought it was very very good. It kept me reading right to the last pages. This author is new to me and I'm happy to read that there are two other books in this series. "

" I really enjoyed this book. I know I read at least one other "Jack Gannon" book - might have been more, but it was good to find out what happend to his sister. Now I'm on to "The Bone Yard" by Jefferson Bass. "

" This one had a nice pace and I enjoy Rick Mofina's style but the plot in general was a bit too blood and gore for me. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Daniel Bustos | 4/27/2012

" Fairly good. Did a good job of tying in subplots without being boring. Protagonist wasn't ever developed very well, but fairly likeable character. Not too vulgar. Book developed at a decent pace with a good ending, but somewhat anticlimactic. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Maureen | 4/1/2012

" 8 chapters in this book and I am giving up on it. The story line is not keeping my interest and the characters are dull. I have read other books by this author but find this one lacking in quality to others like Six Seconds and Vengence. Was disappointing to me. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Jaime Lee | 3/3/2012

" This was a fantastic book! I loved how the story crossed between the US and Mexico. What I really liked is that this was not your ordinary mystery it kept me on the edge of my seat and I could not put it down. I am anxiously awaiting the next Jack Gannon book!!! "
