Ellie Simons's delightful mother-in-law comes to visit for a simply lovely weekend of crocheted doilies, thinly-veiled insults, and passive-aggressive "suggestions."
It's enough to make anyone wish their mother-in-law was dead. But it turns out the ladies of Chitterton Fells should be more careful what they wish for. Only last night Ellie and her friends raised their gin and tonics to toast an end to mothers-in-law the world over . . .
The next day, Pamela Pomeroy's own MIL is found dead. Lady Kitty Pomeroy went over the handlebars of her bike into the village pond and drowned. Was it a horrid accident, or is someone really ridding Chitterton Fells of all the mothers-in-law?
Ellie must catch this killer before her own darling mother-in-law is the next to be bumped off.

"What a witty book! I found this at a used book sale and picked it up based on the great humor I found in the title alone. This book did not disappoint. It was laugh-out-loud funny. Strongly recommend for anyone who has a critical mother-in-law, and a less-than-perfect relationship with her. "

" Dorothy Cannell has a wit that keeps you turning pages for the sheer joy of the smile she brings. She skillfully weaves the primrose paths in twists and turns that keep you wondering what's around the bend. I'm adding her to my list of favorite authors! "

— Jessica, 12/25/2013" Okay I just can't finish this book. I only have a hundred pages left, but I just can't bring myself to read it anymore. It's Misery for me..lol So I am on to read something else on my shelf.. "
— Misti, 11/23/2013" reread 4 October 1995 "
— Lisa, 11/11/2013" Cute ( not what you think), but i still liked her first book a lot better "
— Gail, 3/19/2013" title put me off for years, slow build "
— Helen, 3/17/2013" This book was hilarious!! I loved it. Falling under the "cozy" mystery category, there was more humor and drama than mystery, however. The mystery doesn't really start taking place until the last 70 pages or so, but the book is so good, you won't mind. I highly recommend Dorothy Cannell. "
— Julie, 3/2/2013" Lots of laugh out loud humor. "
— R, 12/9/2012" Funny, quick read...mystery. "
— Silvia, 8/22/2012" the thin woman is much better - i really didn't like the main character (ellie) in this book. the situations seem overly farcical sometimes. it's not bad but i won't be reading it again. "
— Ellen, 8/20/2012" This was a cute little read. Different from my usual reads. The author's vocab is outstanding. I really enjoyed her interesting choice of words. This wasn't a hilarious novel, but it gave me some chuckles every now and then. Definitely a book club read for housewives. :-) "
— Erica, 7/11/2012" This was one of those books that I read just because it was there. It was all right. Kind of heart warming. "
— Kendall, 4/18/2012" One of her best. This is a must read for Cannell readers. "
— Judith, 4/4/2012" Not really a "murder" mystery, more of a funny/quirky book. "
— Krystal, 12/29/2011" I love the Ellie Haskell books - None of them are as fun as the first in the series, The Thin Woman, but they all are quick, snappy reads. Highly recommend the series. "
— Katie, 11/17/2011" Ellie Haskill hosts a dinner party, and her in-laws fight. She and other women of the town complain about their "mums" and most of the book is spent waiting for something to actually happen "
