Publisher Description

Now a major motion picture from Clint Eastwood, starring Tom Hanks—the inspirational autobiography by one of the most captivating American heroes of our time, Capt. ‘Sully’ Sullenberger—the pilot who miraculously landed a crippled US Airways Flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 passengers and crew.

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed a remarkable emergency landing when Captain "Sully" Sullenberger skillfully glided US Airways Flight 1549 onto the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 passengers and crew. His cool actions not only averted tragedy but made him a hero and an inspiration worldwide. His story is now a major motion picture from director / producer Clint Eastwood and stars Tom Hanks, Laura Linney and Aaron Eckhart.

Sully's story is one of dedication, hope, and preparedness, revealing the important lessons he learned through his life, in his military service, and in his work as an airline pilot. It reminds us all that, even in these days of conflict, tragedy and uncertainty, there are values still worth fighting for—that life's challenges can be met if we're ready for them.

"Surprisingly well written! I enjoyed the back and forth style of reading about Sully's life and training as a pilot mixed with accounts of what happened the day he landed the plane in the Hudson. And his writing style is engaging and easy to read--not awkward at all like some authors who are not used to writing. I also learned a tremendous amount about the commercial airline industry and flying that I never knew. I highly recommend this book."

Quotes

  • “It’s no big surprise that Sullenberger’s book—a gripping and genuinely heartwarming account of the splashdown—manages to portray everyone involved as more heroic than himself...Sullenberger’s account of Flight 1549 is a Capra-esque ode to American competence and decency...The book includes details that add a compelling new dimension to the tale.”

    — New York Daily News
  • “Sullenberger’s account of gliding his crippled jetliner down safely onto the Hudson River is a wingdinger...The tone is gently folksy first-person...Sullenberger comes across as an honorable, courageous man.”

    — Cleveland Plain Dealer
  • “Sullenberger’s all-American life story is so compelling that it screams to be required reading for all young people, or anybody else who needs confirmation that courage, dignity, and extraordinary competence can still be found in this land...[A] remarkable life story.”

    — Washington Times
  • “An interesting and eye-opening read.”

    — Examiner.com
  • “Dramatic [and] inspirational.”

    — Publishers Weekly (starred review)
  • This inspiring book tells the story of US Airways pilot Captain ‘Sully’ Sullenberger. Listeners hear not just of his emergency landing on the Hudson but of the life events that prepared him for that moment...Michael McConnohie’s steady, matter-of-fact narration is very much in keeping with Sully’s own character. McConnohie captures the author’s refreshingly modest tone as he conveys his life story.”

    — AudioFile
  • “This memoir-drama imparts insights about the piloting professional as it enthralls readers with its exultant plotline of disaster averted.”

    — Booklist
  • “This is exactly the kind of book you would expect the now-legendary Sully Sullenberger to write. In his memoir, the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549, which set down so memorably on the Hudson River in January, is earnest, controlled and exacting. Sullenberger is not prone to flights of fancy—in fact, he is the very pilot you’d choose for the job if you had any say in it. His book reflects the same qualities.”

    — BookPage
  • “Valuable for anyone interested in how a life lived with integrity prepares a man for the ultimate challenge.”

    — Kirkus Reviews

" Nice book, fast read. The pilot who successfully ditched in the Hudson, saving everyone on board, tells his background, and what he feels was important in enabling him to make the decision he did, and pull it off. He also makes it clear it wasn't his glider training which aided him, which was frequently cited after the incident. He said a glider and a large commercial plane are like night and day. He stresses the values he gained from his parents and from his military service in the Air Force are what formed him. "

" Capt. Sullenberger doesn't want to be classified as a hero, but he is! He was just doing his job, but he did so with professionalism, grace and a lifetime of practiced integrity! I was a bit surprised he never mentioned God, faith or divine help in his journey and overted disaster! "

" A great book about the man who brought down his plane in the Hudson River without losing one passenger. From his early days growing up in Texas and learning to fly crop dusters to flying in the military and then on to commercial flying. An interesting view of the commercial airlines of today and all their problems still to be solved. Here's to one of the greatest pilots out there....I hope I am on your next flight! "
