In Hidden Empire, the sequel to Card's bestselling novel Empire, Averell Torrent has become President of the United States, with enormous political and popular support and, if people only realized it, a tight grip on the reins of both political parties. He has launched America into a get-tough, this-world-is-our-empire foreign policy stance. But Captain Bartholomew Coleman, known as Cole to his friends and enemies alike, sees the danger Torrent poses to American democracy and the potential disasters involved in his foreign military adventures. Cole quickly runs afoul of Torrent; on the run, he and a few friends and allies seek proof of how Torrent orchestrated the political takeover that included assassinating a President and nearly starting a civil war.

"Loved the book. It was an excellent continuation of the first book. It got a little preachy about the role of Christianity, but I did enjoy how factually based it was. Thanks for the great read. The science, drama, and action were all very well done. A MUST READ for Military-Sci-Fi Fans. "
— Cole (5 out of 5 stars)
“Audie Award winner Stefan Rudnicki, nationally syndicated talk-show host Rusty Humphries, and the author himself read, all delivering superb performances.
— Library JournalThe sum of it all is a fine addition to Card's already-impressive canon.
— Providence JournalI love audio books, and this is a good one…I highly recommend Hidden Empire.
— SF Revu" The stuff about Fox News and Christianity in general was pretty ridiculous but the plague stuff made it a fun read. "
— Katie, 5/17/2011" Interesting thriller about an agenda by the president to shape the United States in the format of the Roman Empire. There are interesting subplots and conspiracies. "
— Fredrick, 5/7/2011" A compelling read of plague, war, politics, & Sci-fi all wrapped up together. "
— Derek, 4/12/2011" Really liked this. Just finished Empire right before reading so it was easy to remember the previous story line. Again this book made me think how fragile my way of like is. I also sobbed in this book which I haven't done in a long time. Very sad I am finished. "
— Cindy, 3/31/2011" I only read this because there were so many unanswered questions after the first book, and actually ended up enjoying this more than the first book in the series. "
— Craig, 3/14/2011" This is a follow-up to Empire. "
— Michele, 3/4/2011" I'm having difficulty remembering "Empire," but I have a more positive feeling about this one at the end than I did about that one. I may have to go back and re-read it, though, as I could barely remember the plot points that were brought up as memories. "
— Matthew, 3/3/2011" Card never ceases to amaze me when it comes to his visionary ideas. This was not quite as good as Empire, but close. When's the next one coming out?! "
— Ruth, 3/2/2011" I was a very well written book and made the story seem very possible. I did not like the book because what seemed even likely to happen in the near future. It was not supposed to be a horror book, but it was scary. "
— Michael, 2/13/2011" Fun, scary and thought-provoking. One of Card's better works. "
— Jerry, 2/9/2011" Dear God, this series made me start despising OSC. The first book was good, but this...? I can't even bring myself to describe it on a site as innocent as Goodreads, even on my own fucking profile thing. Read it. And you will understand. Unless you are Glenn Beck. "
— Joey, 2/8/2011" I really enjoyed "Empire" but "Hidden Empire" was a rather poor follow up. I've generally liked all of Orson Scott Card's books but this one was an actual disappointment. "
— Dave, 2/6/2011" It was interesting; certainly gives you something to think about. Politics is a hard thing to get right in any story. "
