Publisher Description

A timeless tale of coming-of-age and transformation. A moving novel by the 19th century master writer Charles Dickens, which has seen nearly twenty film adaptations.

Orphaned Pip lives with his sister and her blacksmith husband. One day, the boy helps a hiding fugitive. Years pass, and Pip works as an apprentice for his brother-in-law. He is unhappily in love with Estella, a beautiful girl raised by the wealthy, eccentric old Miss Havisham. The young people are separated by one of the most prosaic reasons - financial status.

One day, however, it turns out that Pip's life may change dramatically. The young man receives a huge sum of money from an anonymous benefactor. There is one condition - Pip must go to London and pursue his education.

How will Pip, a boy from the provinces, fare in the big city? Will he find out who his benefactor is? And finally - will Pip and Estella's feelings have a happy ending?

About Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was born in Landport, Portsmouth, England, the second of eight children in a family continually plagued by debt. A legacy brought release from the nightmare of debtors’ prison and child labor and afforded him a few years of formal schooling. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his early writings brought him the amazing success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. He was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and he remains popular, responsible for some of English literature’s most iconic characters.
