When elderly Ailsa Lockyer-Fox is found dead in her garden, dressed only in nightclothes and with bloodstains on the ground near her body, the finger of suspicion points at her wealthy husband, Colonel James Lockyer-Fox. A coroner's investigation deems it death by natural causes, but the gossip surrounding James refuses to go away. Friendless and alone, James and his reclusive behavior begins to alarm his attorney, whose concern deepens when he discovers that his client has become the victim of a relentless campaign accusing him of far worse than the death of his wife. James is unwilling to fight the allegations, choosing instead to devote his energies to a desperate search for the illegitimate granddaughter who may prove his savior as he battles for his name-and his life.

"Walter's takes a bit of getting into, I've read several of her books and this is my second fav. You are so convinced you have the mystery all sewn up, but you'll never see the twist coming. And a lovely happy ending to boot ahhhh "
— Rebecca (4 out of 5 stars)
" I always enjoy Ms. Walter's books. She reminds me a bit of Ruth Rendell but with the crime/thriller twist. This one was a winner! "
— Stephanie, 2/15/2014" Minette Walters is always reliable for a good escapist (or train) read and "Fox Evil" is no exception. Basically, this one's dysfunctional family with dark secrets. Mystery and tension are maintained for the majority of the novel, but the ending is flat and probably trite. Still I had no wish to jettison it before the finish. "
— Anne, 2/11/2014" Reworking of English country house mystery, with a band of travelers added. "
— Joe, 2/8/2014" I usually like Minette Walters' books for some quick entertainment when I'm stressed. This book was ok - not spectacular but good enough - until I reached the sloppy, unsatisfying solution to the book. I had expected something intricate and surprising, all the stories ending in a neat resolution. The book, however, left me thinking "Wait, that was IT?!" and feel like I really wasted my time on reading it. "
— Anke, 2/6/2014" took a bit to get into it, and then at the end it seemed to need a lot of explanation crammed into the last chapter, but it was ok "
— Kasey, 2/1/2014" Much better than I had expected. Great pace of story and some awesome characters. There are, however, some fatal flaws in this book, most especially that all of the action takes place in two day. It made it unbelievable to me. "
— Natalie, 1/29/2014" Just arrived from Israel. A quite disappointed book by Minette Walters, pity. "
— Laura, 1/12/2014" An intellectual and alternative view of the crime. Minette provides a new perspective according to the crime novels genre...Interesting "
— Jean, 1/11/2014" Walter's takes a bit of getting into, I've read several of her books and this is my second fav. You are so convinced you have the mystery all sewn up, but you'll never see the twist coming. And a lovely happy ending to boot ahhhh "
— Rebecca, 1/10/2014" This is a really good mystery if you like mysteries, which I do sometimes. It's not trashy or gory, nor does it make you feel like the author is talking to a two year old. "
— Susan, 1/1/2014" I usually enjoy Minette's books, but this one was not so good for me. I found I didn't really connect with any of the characters, and wasn't particularly concerned about their well-being either. The story dragged in places and could have done with a few less chapters to keep things moving along. "
— Anita, 12/25/2013" Great believble creepy people, if you like mysteries "
— Elizabeth, 12/20/2013" Brilliant! And agreed by all those who've borrowed it from me. "
— Meghan, 12/10/2013" A bit of a downer. Highlights the worst of human nature. Left me feeling grubby & like I need to read something innocent like "Peter Rabbit" or "Winnie the Pooh". "
— Julie, 12/9/2013" In my oppinion not as good as some of the other books from this author but it passed the bus journey to and from work. I feel the ending lets the book down. "
— Nigel, 8/2/2013" Never finished it. Read the reviews on Amazon & decided it wasn't worth continuing. "
— Amkd69, 6/7/2013" Well-written & one of my favourite novels by this author. "
— Jenny, 1/20/2013" A required read for a program at the library. The book was too dark for me with not enough character development. "
— Sharon, 1/10/2013" this book was VERY complicated - I had a difficult time following what was going on. "
— Suzy, 11/12/2012" I usually love Minette Walters, but I couldn't get into it after the first 50 pages so I dropped it. Maybe it gets more interesting later. "
— Sally, 5/17/2012" Fun British mystery book. I've read several books by this author - the same characters appear and grow in each book. "
— Jean, 4/26/2012" I have read several of her books and have enjoyed them all. This one not so much. The ending was satisfying, but the beginning was hard to keep on reading. Didn't care enough about the characters to continue reading, but I kept remembering her other books. "
— Deb, 2/16/2012" Page turner, not a literary classic "
— Sandra, 2/10/2012" Great page-turned with convoluted twist at the end. "
— Sue, 1/31/2012" Complicated page turner with one or two far fetched explanations. "
— Jack, 1/5/2012" Read for Mystery Book Club 3/2006 "
— Debbie, 12/11/2011" didnt see the point of it. "
