After her parents' hot air balloon goes down in the Himalayas, Heidy McCloud is sent to live with her uncle Hamish. At the airport, she releases a priceless dachshund from his cage, and the dog follows her to her new home. She names him Sam the Lion, and he quickly wins an important dog show. But another canine lives with Uncle Hamish, and Cassius the poodle will do anything to get Sam out of the picture. Framed by Cassius for a terrible deed, Sam is badly injured and sent into the wild. It takes three years, but Sam-now with a soup ladle for one leg-befriends other strays and plots his revenge as the prestigious Westminster Dog Show approaches. Best-selling author Berkeley Breathed is the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of the Bloom County and Opus comics. His unmistakable sense of humor colors every moment of Flawed Dogs and is skillfully portrayed by award-winning narrator and stand-up comic Johnny Heller. "I've always been a fan of Berkeley Breathed and I am glad he is writing books. The illustrations in this book were typical of his work. I especially loved how he managed to get Bill The Cat in the book. (How he did it I won't say, but it was pretty funny). This is a great dog story and I look forward to the next one. It really is a love story, and yes underdogs do win. I am not sure how the people who attend the Westminster Dog Show will take this book. They may be offended or maybe not. I know some people who take the dog shows pretty darn serious."

" *MINOR SPOIER* Fun, fast read. Loved the illustrations. Story often a little too melodramatic--Sam the dachshund has his leg chopped off, participates in dogfighting, and spends 3 years as an animal test subject!--but these things are iced over to make everything kid-appropriate and the happy ending does satisfy. "
— Peta, 2/19/2014" great read-aloud to kids. "
— Nikki, 2/13/2014" Love triumphs even if your back leg is a soup ladle! "

— Kim, 1/29/2014" Adventure story with dogs. Themes: Revenge, Forgiveness, Perfection, Jealousy, Adversity. "
— Erica, 1/24/2014" What a cute little book. I loved the story of determination and love for your owner at all costs. "
— Heather, 1/18/2014" I liked the book. The story let the reader see that "flawed dogs" need love too. As do "flawed people." "
— Peggy, 1/16/2014" I liked this book, it was cute and funny. Some scenes are sad though, which may upset kids. Overall, this book is on my favorites list. I would recommend it to a child that understands some forms of animal abuse (dog fighting..) and how dogs can sometimes compete for the bond of an owner. "
— Anna, 1/15/2014" I loved this book! Tragedy, mad cap adventure, grace and beauty. Read this book if you have experienced the endless capacity of a dogs love, you have known a wiener dog or you have any sense of humor. "
— Leslie, 1/2/2014" A fun bedtime read with the kids, with a loveable hero and enough gas-related humor to keep them in stitches! "
— Jennifer, 12/24/2013" super cute YA novel about a bunch of throwaway mutts who stage a rebellion in the name of love. did i say super cute? i meant SUPER cute. "
— Jess, 12/22/2013" I assumed this book would be lame because of the cover, but I absolutely loved it!! Couldn't put it down; my heart ached and I cried a little. Good story of love and redemption. "
— Rachel, 12/17/2013" A cute story of a wronged dog told from the dogs perspective, mostly. The dancing is so funny. I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but it is really, really funny. If I saw this book in the store I would just buy it for the cover art. "
— Ragan, 12/16/2013" I didn't like this book because I don't like sad stories/scary. I won't tell you what happens though. "
— Julia, 12/13/2013" Funny! Dogs who cannot find a home decide to take their anger out on the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in the hope they can find a good home and love. Loved the pictures. Loved the story. "
— Sheila, 12/9/2013" I didn't think it was the best book in the world but it was ok "
— Echown, 11/24/2013" This book had me laughing, crying, swearing I will not read another page, and then loving the ending! "
— Vegasreaderdjd, 11/9/2013" Well, the book is said to be for 4-8 year olds, however, it is a little graphic! I think that all kids still should read it as it really makes you realize the absurdness of liking pure bred dogs over the mutts. It is just a really sweet book that totally made me cry! "
— Alyona, 9/12/2013" The cover is so cute - I had to read it. It was a bit of a downer though - although it had an "up" ending. I'd say 8-11 age group. "
— Jena, 7/30/2013" Very sweet and sad and cute. I love it and the pictures really add a special character to it. Poor, sweet, weird, and wonderful dogs. I recommend it to anyone and everyone, young or old. "
— Elisabeth, 5/24/2013" All dachshund lovers (like me!) will love this book. And if you're a poodle fan, don't read it, you won't like them anymore. "
— Loren, 4/16/2013" A story with so many twists and turns, and even a small reference to Bill the Cat. My 8 year old son and I loved reading this together. "
— Laeroport, 1/22/2013" I really enjoyed this one! "
— Jeffnancy, 12/15/2012" Was a great, and very sad book almost made me cry! "
— Devon, 12/3/2012" An emotional tale of a misfit dog and the human who loves him. Extra special for dog-lovers like me. "
— Kate, 11/18/2012" This is a lovely story. Probably for older young adults. When it is sad, it is so VERY sad. But, when it is happy, it is VERY, VERY funny/happy. Loved it. "
— Molly, 2/8/2012" I LOVED this book! However, it was so sad. I always enjoy stories with a moral or theme and this one certainly has one. Even if you don't like dogs, you'll still love Sam the Lion. He's one awesome dachshund! "
— Debra, 9/27/2011" so far i think it is a really good book!!!! "
— Shea, 6/16/2011" I heard a good amount of it while my mom and sister were listening to it in the car.
I really didn't like it. "
— Lynette, 6/15/2011" Really didn't like this one, but gave it two stars for the happy ending and maybe the moral.
Otherwise, it was a bit too dark, for the age group it's written for. I listened to it with my 7 year old and found myself cringing at some parts. "
— LaDawn, 6/14/2011" I loved this book! Tragedy, mad cap adventure, grace and beauty. Read this book if you have experienced the endless capacity of a dogs love, you have known a wiener dog or you have any sense of humor. "
— Leslie, 6/6/2011" What a cute little book. I loved the story of determination and love for your owner at all costs. "
— Heather, 6/4/2011" Because I loved "Flawed Dogs" so much I saw this last week at our school book fair so I HAD to have it! It was very silly and very fun! A great book for reluctant readers... "
— Lisa, 6/3/2011" Good.A little confusing at times but it was a good story. "
— Kiara, 5/18/2011" I was so sad and shocked by the first chapter, I had to jump to the end to reassure myself to get through the happy parts of the dog's life without crying. It was very good and had a good lesson that some can appear not flawed physically but terribly flawed inside and vice versa. "
— Wanda, 5/3/2011" The story of Sam, a dog, whose life has been one long tragedy after another, but who, in the end, takes control of events. A children's novel, but dark and violent. I won't recommend it to any of my animal loving friends. "
