In Fire by Night, the drama of the Civil War unfolds through the eyes of two very different Northern girls. Lovely Julia Hoffman has always enjoyed the carefree life of her well-to-do family, but when she fails to attract the attention of Reverend Nathaniel Greene, a fierce abolitionist, she determines to bring meaning to her empty and shallow existence. When she becomes a Union nurse, her eyes are opened to the realities of war and suffering. She also meets Phoebe, who has entered the army under false pretenses—and whose journey to understanding herself, as well as the tumultuous world about her, is revealed with sensitivity and drama. " Excellent book about a young women who becomes a nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War. She is from a elite family who cringed at her decision. She goes through a refining process. Very interesting to see the whole medical side of the war. Great read. "

" I enjoyed this 2nd book in Lyn Austins series. This book was about the main character in the 1st book's cousin. I really enjoy reading about the other side of the story...the first book was about the confederates side and experiences but this one is about Julia Hoffman, the cousin, who enrolls to be a nurse and goes against society to follow her heart. It also tells this story of a young woman who pretends to be a Union officer and then their stories combine to enhance the tale. I thought it was a good sequel to the first part of the story. now onto the next... "

" Historical, Christian, fiction-- I liked the religious references. I felt like it was inspiring rather than preachy. The story follows two young women during the civil war through their strengths and weaknesses as they find their own place in wartimes. "

" I just loved this book. I stayed up all night finishing it. It is written so beautifully and vividly, you feel as if you are there experiencing right along with the characters. And I loved how I went from not really caring for Julia in the first book because of her selfishness to absolutely loving her and Phoebe in this book. I also love the way so much history is weaved into the story. It was funny because I had just been studying Dorthea Dix with my daughter and then there she is in this story. Wonderful story and I can't wait to read the next. "
