A woman is cruelly cut down in a remote corner of Arizona, killed on her nineteenth wedding anniversary by a drunk motorist.? A year later, the driver himself dies badly, and all suspicions point to the slain woman's still-grieving husband as his murderer. But the truth is rarely black and white in the long Southwestern shadows, and one law officer is not rushing to condemn the tragic widower so quickly: Joanna Brady, Sheriff of Cochise County. Brady's convictions, however, are leading her on a twisted trail through inhospitable country—and setting her on a path that will bring her face-to-face with cold, calculating death in the high, lonely desert.

"Joanna Brady, a recent widow with a young daughter, didn't think she stood a chance in the election for Sheriff of Cochise County. Now she's hip deep in office politics, wrestling with 'the good ole boy network', and trying desperately to find out how Dr. Amos Buckwalter ended up dead in a fire at his veterinary clinic...and who killed him.The obvious suspect is Hal Morgan, whose wife was killed by a drunk driver on their anniversary. The drunk driver was the aforementioned Dr. Amos Buckwalter and he got off with a slap on the wrist. As the story unfolds, it seems Morgan isn't the only one who wanted the veterinarian dead. There are subplots in this story, but they follow a logical course and add to the development of several characters. I like Joanna a lot and I'm always pulling for her as she tries to become a 'real' law enforcement officer, not just a figurehead, as some in the community (and in her office) thought she would be. Overall, I liked this book and felt Jance did a good job telling a compelling story."

“The best thing about Jance's books is Joanna Brady…Jance can move Brady from an exciting, dangerous scene on one page to a sensitive, touching personal moment on the next.”
— Amazon.com, editorial review“Jance skillfully ties the mystery to the southeastern Arizona landscape, its historic mining towns and their modern problems.”
— Publishers Weekly“Jance is hot and getting hotter.”
— Booklist“J. A. Jance hypnotically lures her audience with her cleverly crafted characters and keeps them hooked with a story line that is simultaneously challenging and entertaining. As police procedurals go, the Joanna Brady series is one of the best and it is hoped that it will not be long before the next enthralling installment is published.”
— Midwest Book Review“Perfect entertainment for anybody who wonders how J. J. Marric’s George Gideon would’ve made out as a southwestern American female.”
— Kirkus Reviews" Joanna Brady is a single mother dealing with grief over the loss of her husband. She has to deal with an over-bearing mother and a 9-year-old daughter as she struggles to balance her life. She is also Sheriff of a large county in southern Arizona, where she works with some men who resent her in the position. But Brady is able to handle the demands of being a law-enforcement officer with common sense and sympathy. J. A. Jance's writing of the Arizona terrain resonates with those who know the area. It is rich with a history of Apache strongholds and mining. This is the 4th in the Joanna Brady series, and Jance portrays a real-life character that the reader cheers for, worries about, and is happy when she is successful in solving crimes. I look forward to reading the next episode in Joanna Brady's life. "

— Lia, 1/27/2014" This is my fifth or so Jance, and her formulas are wearing a bit thin now. The plot felt kind of jerky to me, with too many diversions about Brady's personal life that felt like the ballwas dropped re: suspense. Oh, and I had guessed the killer long before the end this time ... "
