When two young women are murdered on the streets of New York, exactly one year apart, Detective Ellie Hatcher is called up for a special assignment on the homicide task force. The killer has left behind a clue connecting the two cases to FirstDate.com, a popular online dating service, and Flann McIlroy, an eccentric, publicity-seeking homicide detective, is convinced that only Ellie can help him pursue his terrifying theory: someone is using the lure of the internet and the promise of love to launch a killing spree against the women of New York City. To catch the killer, Ellie must enter a high-tech world of stolen identities where no one is who they appear to be. And for her, the investigation quickly becomes personal. She fits the profile of the victims, and she knows firsthand what pursuing a sociopath can do to a cop - back home in Wichita, Kansas, her own father lost his life trying to catch a notorious serial murderer. When the FirstDate killer begins to mimic the monster who destroyed her father, Ellie knows the game has become personal for him, too. Both hunter and prey, she knows her only choice is to find the killer before he claims his next victim - who could very well be Ellie herself. Download and start listening now!

" this was a good book! This was the first book I've read by the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I will be picking up the next book in the series as soon as I go to the Public Library tomorrow. The suspense was great with a few unexpected twists. Plus, she left an opening for the next book just perfectly! "

" This is the second Ellie Hatcher book I've read, even though it's the first in the series. I read two in one weekend and that might have been the problem. Maybe it was the distraction of Hurricane Sandy... or the ads for a new Bond film on TV ... either way, I got lost somewhere in all the characters and thought I would just ride it out and enjoy the story, knowing Ellie would live to be in future stories. Embarrassing as it is to admit, I am still not 100% sure who did what and why, but it was a bit like the first time I saw a sci-fi movie... just go with momentary confusion and hope that good triumphs in the end. I like Ellie and her brother, and look forward to more of the series. Just not too many at once;) "

" Just finished this one. Its a bit predictable but this is her first novel and i think it was well done. It kept me reading. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Erin | 2/10/2014

" Entertaining, for the first book in a new mystery series. I particularly enjoyed the connections that the main character, Ellie, shares with her family. It makes her seem real. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Ashley Lucas | 2/2/2014

" I needed something light to read in between heavier things, and though I didn't expect much from this book, it surprised me. It's quick, easy, and captivating. I've been a fan of the author's father, James Lee Burke, for a long time, and in a fun nod to her dad, Alafair Burke actually includes a brief conversation between her detective, Ellie Hatcher, and her father's most beloved detective, Dave Robicheaux. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Andrea | 1/17/2014

" A fun and fast-paced NYC murder mystery involving online dating, credit card scams, Russian heroin dealers, and a whole lot of plot twists. Not gruesome or chilling, although there were several murders. "

" I like ALafair's books, she's my new found replacement for James Patterson seeing as I've read most of his books and was missing having them to read..... This book was an eye opener to understanding more about identity theft using email....a crazy world out there "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Suzanne | 11/14/2013

" This was my first Alafair Burke book, although technically the Samantha Kincaid series was written before this Ellie Hatcher debut. Vastly enjoyed the writing style and intricate mystery. Loved Ellie and can't wait for more in this series!! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Krista | 8/31/2013

" Really enjoyed Ms. Burke's writing and the character development -my only gripe is the editing. Megan and Maggie are not the same name. The worst part is they are one page apart! Will definitely read more of the Ellie Hatcher books though. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Evelyn | 8/3/2013

" I really liked this book and the character of Ellie Hatcher. I am a BIG fan of the books written by this author's father, so I was happy to see the inclusion of his signature character, albeit briefly. I look forward to reading her other books. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Julie Burns | 3/1/2013

" Over all I enjoyed the book, however it really bugs me when authors don't get details right. Starbucks doesn't sell Oregon Chai, it sells Tazo chai, so please don't have people in Starbucks drinking Oregon Chai... "

" Looks to be another really good detective/mystery series with a strong female lead. I really appreciated Burke's 'not so subtle nod to her father' occuring about two thirds of the way thru the book! It appears that Alafair Burke hasn't fallen far from the tree...she too, is a great author! "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Kaye | 1/24/2011

" getting ready to start this one today. I just discovered this series via Facebook!

I really wanted to love this book. I enjoyed her other books, but this one just didn't keep my attention like I want a good mystery to. It was just meh. Not sure if I'll continue with this series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Elizabeth | 10/11/2010

" 8/10. Really like the protag in this. It's the first in the series, but the second I've read, so it was nice to some background. Nice twists. Good read. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Lois | 8/8/2010

" Premise: Man manipulates online dating service to kill women.

Best part: e-mails and dialog between Ellie and Peter.

Worst: Writing got clunkier as the book went along. "
