Sixteen-year-old Julia Whitmire appeared to have everything: a famous father, a luxurious Manhattan town house, a coveted spot at the elite Casden prep school. When she is found dead in her bathtub, a handwritten suicide note left on her bed, her parents insist that their daughter would never take her own life. But Julia’s enviable world was more complicated than it seemed. The pressure to excel at Casden was enormous. Abuse of prescription antidepressants and ADHD medication ran rampant among students; an unlabeled bottle of pills in Julia’s purse suggests she had succumbed to the trend. And a search of Julia’s computer reveals that in the days leading up to her death she was engaged in a dangerous game of cyberbullying against an unlikely victim. NYPD detective Ellie Hatcher is convinced the case is a suicide, but she knows from personal experience that a loving family can be the last to accept the truth. When the Whitmires use their power to force a criminal investigation, Ellie’s resistance causes trouble for her both at work and in her personal life. As she is pressured to pursue a case she doesn’t believe in, she is pulled into Julia’s inner circle — an eclectic mix of overly precocious teenagers from Manhattan’s most privileged families as well as street kids from Greenwich Village. But when the target of Julia’s harassment continues to receive death threats, Ellie is forced to acknowledge that Julia may have learned the hard way that some secrets should never be told.

"I found this to be a very good read, this sins of the fathers/mothers, adult decisions influencing and forever altering the lives ot the chilren they swore to protect. symapthetic teen characters, behaving in the manner you would expect from their either privilidged or dismal childhoods, adults scheming to promote their own agenda's, either through misguided ideas, or cold caluclated crimes convicted to secure what they believe is their due. and very believable female lead cop trying to reconcile herself with the past and finding the courage to leap into an unsure future."

" I disliked this novel, and was unable to listen to more than a few chapters before giving up in disgust. "
— Danna, 1/16/2020" PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get this woman a decent editor! All four books had several character names wrong which to me is unacceptable. I love Ms. Burke's writing and will read her Samantha Kincaid series now that I have finished the Ellie Hatcher books. "
— Krista, 2/16/2014" Alafair's writing continues to improve, her character development is improving. "
— Pamela, 2/14/2014" This book was recommended to me and it did not catch my attention and keep it. Sorry but it just wasn't the book for me. Why do people think that just because I woman is a cop they are unfeeling and have to be overly tough? "
— Charlotte, 2/10/2014" This is the 4th book in the Ellie Hatcher series, and although I've really enjoyed all the other books I've read by this author, this one was just okay. I struggled between 2 and 3 stars. The story line is pretty good, but the book kind of dragged. "
— Kathryn, 2/4/2014" So many twists and turns and a good surprise of a solution to this detective story, my first outing with Alafair Burke and Ellie Hatcher. An excellent, satisfying read. To say more would be to spoil the book for others! "
— Sue, 1/22/2014" Absorbing, however, by the time it concludes it has worn you out. "
— Judy, 1/16/2014" Loving this one will finish it tomorrow. I needed a good mystery! "
— Cathy, 12/11/2013" Always a good mystery with a bit of the frustrations of a personal relationship and making it work. I also love the fact that often some of the story takes place in Portland. "
— Barbara, 12/11/2013" A mystery I couldn't put down. I don't usually read mysteries, but this one was great!! "
— Laura, 12/5/2013" Couldn't put this one down. "
— Kerry, 6/22/2013" An interesting concept. The main character, Ellie, frustrated and irritated me at times but in the end she "evolved" slightly. Worth reading and may be up someone's alley of interest. "
— Gerri, 6/12/2013" Slow starter then I found I was near the end. I think that's good. "
— Ian, 3/30/2013" This book kept me guessing until the end. However the author put more effort into the subplot then the main mystery. "
— Melissa, 3/20/2013" The book started out a little slow, but once the story started rolling, it was a good read. "
— Mary, 3/16/2013" First 50 pages moved nicely. The next 50 picked up, and then we were off to the races. Lots of fun twists and turns and a wonderful protagonist in Ellie Hatcher. The daughter is becoming just like her father, a must read author. "
— Don, 3/2/2013" As always. a good read. I have read not all but some of her work. This one seem way too complicated and thus unbelievable. Still, I finished it and I won't quit reading Alafair Burke. "
— Jim, 2/18/2013" Really enjoyed. Easy to get into with a fabulously woven story "
— Heather, 1/11/2013" Another solid entry in the Ellie Hatcher series. "
— Stephanie, 8/5/2012" This was just okay for me. I didn't really get into the story and maybe part of that was because this is a series and the first book I read by the author. "
— Tina, 7/16/2012" Well paced, compelling, nice twists and turns. Satisfying. I would read more of her books. "
