Novelist and professional companion Evangeline Ames has rented a cottage in the outskirts of Little Dixby, far from the London streets where she was recently attacked. Fascinated by the paranormal energy of nearby Crystal Gardens, she finds some pleasurable diversion in sneaking past the wall to explore the grounds. And when her life is threatened again, she instinctively goes to the gardens for safety.
Lucas Sebastian has never been one to ignore a lady in danger, even if she is trespassing on his property. Quickly disposing of her would-be assassin, he insists they keep the matter private. There is plenty of whispering about him already, with rumors of treasure buried under his garden, and occult botanical experiments performed by his uncle—who died of mysterious causes.
Immediately sensing each other’s psychic talents, as well as their mutual desire, Lucas and Evangeline find themselves with an even more pressing concern. Whoever tried to have her killed will try again. But who would want her dead?
With Evangeline’s skill for detection, and Lucas’s sense of the criminal mind, they soon discover that they share a common enemy. And as the dangerous energy emanating from Crystal Gardens grows stronger, they realize that to survive they must unearth what has been buried for too long.

"It took me a bit to realize that it was set -from what i assume- in the past, with horse drawn carriages, corsets and odd clothing, and a different way of speaking! It was a pretty good book I just found the whole people with "psychical abilitie"s a bit to odd for me!"

" This book was entertaining enough and kept my interest but I was kind of disappointed in it. The mysteries were not very complex or interesting. The characters are what kept me interested & entertained, but due to the complexity of her other novels I had expected more to this story. I hope the upcoming novels in the series are closer in quality to her earlier books. I will certainly give them a try simply because I have enjoyed her others so much. But this one only gets three stars. "
— Denise, 2/11/2014" Pretty usual in her series. The next one will probably be comparable. "
— Ellen, 2/4/2014" Was disappointed in this book. "
— Robin, 1/28/2014" not real impressed, the narrator of the audio book drives my rating. Almost gave it up early on to pick up a hard copy, but didn't. May have enjoyed it more if I had. "
— Mary, 1/22/2014" A new series to love... thanks! "
— Mary, 1/20/2014" Evangeline Ames is attacked after she leaves a job, and moves temporarily to a small town next to an estate full of paranormal energy. She is attacked once more, and moves to the estate for safety, under the protection of the new owner, Lucas Sebastian. Lucas and Evangeline must find out who is behind the continuing attacks against her, and also solve a mystery at the gardens. "
— Guna, 1/20/2014" I enjoyed this book, but definitely not as much as previous books I've read of hers. The characters felt very flat to me, and the plot was definitely lacking. There were too many things going on at once, and none of them made much sense. The idea was intriguing and I did enjoy it, but overall this book was forgettable and I'm not likely to re-read it. "
— Laura, 1/19/2014" Okay, so she finally stopped the trilogies under her different pseudonyms, but now could we have a historical romance without the "paranormal" stuff? "
— Donna, 1/19/2014" Another great book by Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz/Jayne Castle). I love the mix of mystery and paranormal. Can't wait to read the next in the series. "
— Sharon, 1/7/2014" Romance, magical and menacing garden and buried treasure. "
— Sheila, 1/2/2014" Two thumbs up! I'm glad to see the author taking a break from the Arcane Society. Looking forward to more stories from the Ladies of Lantern Street. "
— Judy, 12/14/2013" This is a typical Amanda Quick, which isn't a problem really. The concept of the fatal gardens is clever, although more could be done with it. If you're a fan, you'll enjoy it. "
— Meg, 11/23/2013" I loved this one, as usual. I really do enjoy her books. But, I wanted the end to have a bit more danger or drama.... "
— Melanie, 11/23/2013" The paranormal powers were all in play and the gardens reminded me of the ones in the Harmony books. Looks like a trilogy A Ladies of Lantern Street Novel #1 with the main lady's friends set up as bks 2 & 3. May not be an Arcane bk but very close... "
— Teresa, 8/26/2013" Typical Amanda Quick. Nothing really new or unusual, but a good addition to her paranormal series. I prefer the modern outings written as Jayne Ann krentz but these are enjoyable, escapist reads..... "
— Denise, 7/8/2013" Another great book by Amanda Quick. I really enjoyed it loved Lucas and Evangeline. "
— Ursula, 6/17/2013" cant wait for the next one! "
— Billie, 2/3/2013" One of the increasingly common woo-woo historical fiction books. A fast read, moderately entertaining. Definitely fluff. "
— Amy, 11/23/2012" Couldn't put it down! Entrancing! "
— Julie, 7/16/2012" There was a lot going on in this one. I kind of missed the quirkiness that normally appears with the characters. I enjoyed this and look forward to the next ones. "
