Meet Egyptologist Amelia Peabody in the first mystery in the Victorian-era, New York Times-bestselling series.
"If Indiana Jones were female, a wife, and a mother who lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson."—Publishers Weekly
Amelia Peabody, that indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way, Amelia rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been “ruined” and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her rascally lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo.
Eluding Evelyn’s former lover, who wants her back, and Evelyn’s cousin Lord Ellesmere, who wishes to marry her, the two women sail up the Nile to an archaeological site that is home to a rather lively mummy. Soon strange visitations, suspicious accidents, and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

"Some of this book was a 3 stars for me, and some was 5, so I went for the middle ground. It started a little slow, I thought. And the main character loves archeology, so some of those parts got skimmed. At first I wasn't sure about the main character's personality, but by the middle I was so amused by her. And the mystery was very intriguing. One funny thing was that I was reading a very old copy so the dust in the pages irritated my allergies, but I kept on reading! I would read this author again, but I may go digital from here on out."

— Janie, 11/13/2013" It started out a little slow, but then I became very interested in the characters. I think I'd like to get to know Amelia Peabody better. "
— Amy, 10/30/2013" Plotting is a tad primitive - can see the villain and resolution from a mile off. But the Victorian voice is passably done and there are some nice comic scenarios. "
— Fern, 10/14/2013" Not great. Not horrible. Nice to read a mystery story that isn't full of blood and guts. On the other hand, most people these days will turn their noses up at this one because it doesn't move fast enough. "
— Peregrina651, 10/10/2013" We have read--or more accurately listened to--quite a few of the Amelia Peabody books. I did not realize we had not read the first one. It was fun to find out how the series begins. These are always fun for a light mystery read. "
— Lncropper, 2/19/2013" One of my all-time favorites. I read this book just about once year, every year. Love the characters, especially Amelia, and all the archaelogical facts. "

— Mslogar, 5/13/2011" One of my all-time favorites "
— Saralee, 5/4/2011" Amelia is so lovable. She is gruff but on the inside her heart is huge. I found the mystery itself predictable and very easy to figure out, which would normally take away from a story but in this case didn't. You'll find yourself routing for the characters and laughing at Amelia's witty narration! "
— Nose-in-a-book, 4/29/2011" I can't get enough of this series. Entertaining and a fun read. "
— Emily, 4/14/2011" Witty and funny. I really loved this book for all it's wit and charm. I usually don't like mysteries, but this was had plenty of light-hearted moments to outweigh and overpower the suspenseful ones. "
— Hillory, 4/13/2011" The first of 20+ Amelia Peabody adventures (all with more-or-less satisfying endings), these Victorian feminist archaelogical mystery adventures are right up my alley. "
— Katherine, 4/12/2011" Now, this is the kind of mystery I like! There's action, romance, history and sarcasm on almost every page. I absolutely loved it! I'm anxious to continue with the series, especially since the 9th installment is due out soon. Yay! "
— B.L., 4/12/2011" Snarky, humorous, characters in exotic Egypt. Peters tell a good story with all the detail of someone who really experienced a winter in a wadi mucking about with the details of a dig. "
— Nicole, 4/7/2011" Saw this on Melanies good reads and decided to read it myself. I laughed throughout. A delightful read, predictable but I didn't care. Fell in love with the witty, and irrascable characters. "
