Publisher Description

In the stillness of a golden September afternoon, deep in the wilderness of the Rockies, a solitary craftsman, Grady Adams, and his magnificent Irish wolfhound, Merlin, step from shadow into light…and into an encounter with enchantment. That night, through the trees, under the moon, a pair of singular animals will watch Grady’s isolated home, waiting to make their approach.

A few miles away, Camillia Rivers, a local veterinarian, begins to unravel the threads of a puzzle that will bring to her door all the forces of a government in peril.

At a nearby farm, long-estranged identical twins come together to begin a descent into darkness…. In Las Vegas, a specialist in chaos theory probes the boundaries of the unknowable…. On a Seattle golf course, two men make matter-of-fact arrangements for murder…. Along a highway by the sea, a vagrant scarred by the past begins a trek toward his destiny.

In a novel that is at once wholly of our time and timeless, fearless and funny, Dean Koontz takes listeners into the moment between one turn of the world and the next, across the border between knowing and mystery. It is a journey that will leave all who take it Breathless.

"Breathless is bound to leave you breathless...and hungering for the unknown mysteries to actually become. This is one of Koontz's best and will leave you feeling much better for having read it. If only the suspension of our disbelief could become a wonderful reality. I don't want to spoil this one, but it is a must-read for anyone who craves beauty in this world. I especially loved several phrases in the dialogue on page 312...words I hope to be able to live by."

Quotes

  • “Another gripping novel laced with both high adventure and suspense…Has all of the literary snap, crackle, and pop so evident in Koontz’s previous books.”

    — Tuscon Citizen
  • “A first-rate first-alien-encounter yarn.”

    — Booklist
  • “You know a book is good when you forget to eat. You know it’s great when you forget to sleep. When you temporarily lose sight of all around you, you know that it is another masterpiece written by Dean Koontz…With dazzling imagery, the characters become real as their intensity—and often times innocence—soar off the pates. Offering his readers an overhead view of life in his world, Breathless is without a doubt his best.”

    — Suspense Magazine
  • “In Breathless, Dean Koontz shows his fans why he is such a brilliant storyteller. His imagination moves even the stoic naysayer, and his exploration of the paranormal is a literary event in itself in this tale that weaves together many seemingly unrelated stories of terror, hardship, and agony…Koontz truly leaves his reader breathless by book’s end.”

" this book was amazing all the way up till the end, i thought they could of ended it way better, it felt like they rushed the ending. the story itslef was really smart and interesting. i love it when a book comes together at the end, but there was some holes they didnt fill in. otherwise the biginning and middle of the book was great! " One of my goals for the year is to read thrillers aimed at grownups in an attempt to broaden my readers advisory skills. This was the first one I tried. It had short chapters with mysterious or cliff-hanger endings and multiple plot lines/characters that mostly tied together at the end. "

" I pre-ordered this book since it had been a while since I'd read a Koontz book and had some high hopes for it. I was extremely disappointed. I'm starting to think that Koontz has peaked and his publishers will ship anything he sends them. Don't waste your time with this one, some of the more interesting elements have little relation to the central plot and you'll be left wondering "but what about...?" "

" I'm thinking the Koontz estate has one of those computer programs. Enter the amount of good/bad characters, enter the killers weapon of choice, enter the location - woods/forest/farm etc, enter an ending - aliens good, aliens bad, shape-shifter, dimension-jumper, time-traveller etc and press GO.... "

" It's a page-turner. Kept me reading, wanting to know how the characters would eventually interconnect. Interesting sci-fi horror. Intelligently written. Koontz has a gift for descriptive language. "

" A phenomenally fast read that developed quickly and then abruptly ended. I suppose that's why it was called "Breathless" who knows. But I was left with an empty feeling when it was over, sort of wondering what just happened? "
