Publisher Description

Exquisite prose and wondrous storytelling have helped make Rudolfo Anaya the father of Chicano literature in English. Indeed, Anaya's tales fairly shimmer with the haunting beauty and richness of his culture. The winner of the Pen Center West Award for Fiction for his unforgettable novel Alburquerque, Anaya is perhaps best loved for his classic bestseller, Bless Me, Ultima... Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past-a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world...and will nurture the birth of his soul.

"I have had several students recommend this book to me, and I am glad that I finally read it! There are so many different pieces of this novel that students can relate to while being genuinely engaged with the characters and dialogue. Because of the many strengths of this story, I am now going to teach it in AP Lit!"

" One of those books I could easily see becoming a 5-star rating upon re-reading. It took me a bit to get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Anaya's vision of spirituality is mesmerizing. "

" This book had a lot of potential considering my affinity for Latin American themes, and there were aspects of it I enjoyed, but on the whole I found it trying. I just never got over the main supposition which is that a seven year old spends all his time contemplating HUGE picture questions such as the nature of God and sin the injustice of the world. It was just so incredibly serious the whole way through. It seemed so unbelievable to me that I couldn't really sink into the message. Had the main character been different the whole thing would have rung more true to me. "

" Bless Me, Ultima is beautifully written and told, but I didn't "like" the story. I think part of my resistance is that I grew up in a Mexican Protestant family, which isn't very common. My mother is from Jalisco, Mexico, and her mother's side of the family were never Catholic and were very opposed to things that appeared to be "ceremonial." I could just imagine my mother reading over my shoulder with wide eyes because the story is about a curandera and her influence on a young Catholic boy...Catholicism and brujeria, oh my! "
