Beautifully written, powerfully felt, full of both abundant joy and heart-wrenching sorrow, Beachcombers is an extraordinary novel that centers on the bittersweet reunion of three captivating, very different sisters on Nantucket over one gorgeous, exhilarating summer.
Abbie Fox hasn’t seen her father or two younger sisters in almost two years, during which she’s jetted around the world and experienced life, if not love. But now Lily, the baby of the family, is sending Abbie urgent emails begging her to return home to Nantucket. Their middle sister, Emma, has taken to her bed, emotionally devastated after the loss of her high-powered stockbroker’s job and a shockingly unexpected break-up with her fiancé. Also, Lily is deeply worried that Marina, the beautiful, enigmatic woman renting their guesthouse, has set her sights on the sisters’ widowed father, Jim. The Fox girls closed ranks years ago after the haunting, untimely death of their mother, but seeing their dad move on with his life forces each of them to take stock.
Over the course of the summer, the sisters’ lives grow as turbulent as the unpredictable currents encircling Nantucket. When Abbie encounters an incredibly appealing married man, she breaks her own rules in the name of love, fearing all the while that she’ll regret it. Meanwhile, type-A Emma learns a new definition of success, and strong-minded Lily must reconcile her dreams with reality. Even Marina, who has come to Nantucket to forget heartbreak and betrayal, faces an astonishing turn of events that will find her torn between fate and freedom. At summer’s end, these unforgettable women will face profound choices—and undergo personal transformations that will surprise even themselves.

"This book (and others by this author and Elin Hilderbrand) make me want to visit Nantucket so bad! Besides that, I enjoyed this book because it was dramatic and suspenseful. Cheesy, slightly mindless chick lit at its best, I love reading about how women, especially sisters, confide in, pick each other up, and help one another out through the messiness of life. Not sure why? It made me appreciate my own life, simple things that make it great- like the beach! :)"

“Nancy Thayer has a deep and masterly understanding of love and friendship, of where the two complement and where they collide.
— Elin HilderbrandThayer portrays beautifully the small moments, inside stories and shared histories that build families.
— The Miami HeraldThis is a charming and fun summer read. Readers will love this story of family and love.
— The Plain DealerNancy Thayer’s sense of place is powerful, and her words are hung together the way my grandmother used to tat lace.
— Dorothea Benton Frank" So ridiculously predictable I found myself laughing in parts! The story could have been ok, but the character development was so poor that it really hindered the plot. Bummer. "
— Shannon, 2/15/2014" A good, quick read - would be ideal for the beach. An engrossing plot, but it makes me realize what a great author Elin Hilderbrand is...same setting (Nantucket), same subject matter (family drama), yet something was missing. "
— Stephanie, 2/6/2014" Very predictable, but a cute ending! It's a quick, easy read! "
— Karen, 2/1/2014" I enjoyed this. It was a quick and satisfying read. "
— Lucy, 1/24/2014" This book was pretty much what I expected it to be--a fast, light summer beach read. The characters didn't have much depth and the plot was a bit too predictable, though the author did throw in a couple of twists that I didn't expect. Overall, if you just want a fun and engaging chick-lit style page turner, this is a good choice. "
— Anne, 1/15/2014" Fun, light read. I love books about Nantucket and this one did not disappoint. Really enjoyed the dynamics betweeen the three sisters and how their lives played out. Great summer read. "
— Jaimie, 1/12/2014" There were so many characters in this book, a lot of drama, and the ending was kind of convenient. It was ok, but I ended up skimming because I was waiting for something unpredictable. "
— Marysa, 1/9/2014" I really enjoyed this book. Very well written, I liked the set-up of the chapters (each one focused on a different person but the storyline continued forward). The story focused on a family in Nantucket and each character is dealing with a different type of loss (job, significant other, etc). "
— Jaime, 1/6/2014" I could relate to the book as I have four sisters and grew up motherless. But life usually doesn't have everyone living happily ever after. "
— Denise, 12/31/2013" This was typical chick lit a good read for the beach. It was OK, not great and not terrible. "
— Mo, 12/19/2013" This book was fine. I just didn't think that it was very interesting. A little (lot) predictable. A good beach read, and it has a nice happy ending, but... "
— Briel, 12/18/2013" I read this book sometime last year. I remember it being difficult to get into, but once I got connected to the characters, I didn't want it to end. Looking forward to reading more by this author! "
— Jennifer, 12/5/2013" The characters were a little one dimensional and there was very little description. The ending was too perfect, for me, anyways - everything wrapped up in a neat little bow, which was a little annoying. But it wasn't the worst thing I've read. "
— Chelsea, 11/23/2013" Great beach read. Loved the characters! Was a fun book to get lost in. "
— Jazzie077, 11/16/2013" This book starts out interesting, with different and interesting characters that draw you in and make you want to read more. However, it ended up a little too unrealistic for my liking. "
— Rusha, 10/18/2013" It was just ok. No real character development, it was too short. Just got to know the characters and all of a sudden it was over. Could be a perfect read for a day at the beach. "
— Ellen, 6/14/2013" Very pleasant book to read. About a single father who lives on Nantucket and his adult daughters who all come home for a life-changing summer. Very fast read. "
— Elaine, 5/21/2013" A really good book, I enjoyed it. "
— Kristy, 5/15/2013" I liked this. The audio book narrator was very good. I'm a sucker for books set by the ocean. I had a little trouble initially keeping the sisters straight. There was enough variation in plot to keep it from being totally formulaic, so I'll probably read or listen to other books by this author. "
— Laura, 4/18/2013" It was a pleasant, easy read if a bit unrealistic. "
— Elaine, 1/1/2013" Bravo, bravo, bravo!!! If I could give this book 10 stars I would. Excellent fast read. Now on to her next one!!! "
— Anna, 11/1/2012" Good summer/vacation read. "
— Meg, 10/19/2012" V good...v dreamy...v girly... "
— Darsha18, 10/5/2012" Fast summer read. Loved all the characters. Once again needs a disclaimer for some cussing. "
— Leslie, 6/27/2012" Sisters return to Nantucket when one gets fired, loses all her money and her husband leaves her. Their Mother committed suicide, and they fear that it will happen to one of them. "
— Linda, 5/10/2012" This book really frustrated me. The characters made choices that seemed very out of the ordinary for them or things that seemed outside of their normal decisions. And it seemed all very simplistic. Jump into this releationship after leaving a relationship. "
— Darcie, 3/4/2012" sometimes corny and predictable but a fine no-brainer read. "
— Kiley, 10/11/2011" Sisters come together again after a time apart, each dealing with there own worries, get to know each other again and their dad. Perfect summer type of book! "
— +, 5/12/2011" This is a great sister story. I love how they love and respect each other, but still have their issues. I also liked the loyalty they have to their father. It is a great story with a few twists that you don't expect. "
— Jodi, 5/8/2011" loved this book. very touching. happy endings are how i like my books. "
— Tiffanie, 4/11/2011" Can I give it a half of a star? This book must have been written by a twelve year old. Bad characters, bad plot, bad message to women everywhere. Have I made my opinion clear? "
— Afie, 4/5/2011" So ridiculously predictable I found myself laughing in parts! The story could have been ok, but the character development was so poor that it really hindered the plot. Bummer. "
— Shannon, 3/28/2011" Not great as far plot/writing. Characters very transparent, no depth to them. Still couldn't put it down, something about the island kept calling me! "
— Heidi, 3/12/2011" great book about three sisters and their return to their childhood home in Nantucket. Very easy to read and i enjoy books about families and their trials and tribulations "

— Jill, 3/9/2011" Light read! I wish I had sisters... "
— Christine, 3/7/2011" About 3 sisters who come back to their childhood home in Nantucket. Each chapter is only a few pages long and switches back from not only the three sisters but also some other characters that show up in the book. It's a light read. "
— Dara, 3/6/2011" ok....all the girls predictably ended up with the guys,. "
— Lila, 3/6/2011" Great story about three sisters who are all very different, but very much sisters. The book started off a bit slow, but once the book got going, I really liked and how each girls summer changed their lives. "
— Katie, 2/23/2011" Great book for a long, cold night. First time I have read this author and will be looking for more of her books as I thoroughly enjoyed this. "
