Vera, a young Aleut girl who lives with an elderly couple on a larger island so that she can attend school, returns home for the summer of 1942 to visit her mother and friends. But when the Japanese launch an air attack on the Aleutian Islands, the U.S. government reacts by "evacuating" most of the Aleut population. Vera and her village are forced to leave their small island of Kashega and spend the rest of the war in internment camps, facing sickness, suffer, and death.

About Karen Hesse
Karen Hesse is the author of some fifteen books for children, and was recently awarded a prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” for her contribution to literature for children and young adults. Her many novels have garnered considerable success, including the Sydney Taylor Award, the IRA/YA Award, 5 Notable Books for Children, 4 Best Books for Young Adults, and the Newberry Medal. Hesse has spent many years promoting her books to the school market, and is well-known in classrooms throughout the country. She and her husband, Randy, live in Brattleboro, Vermont.
About Sarah Jones
Sarah Jones is a Tony- and Obie Award-winning playwright, actor, and poet. Her multicharacter solo shows, including the Tony Award-winning Bridge and Tunnel, which was originally produced Off-Broadway by Oscar winner Meryl Streep before its Broadway run, have garnered critical acclaim from around the country and the world. She has had sold-out runs at the Kennedy Center and Berkeley Repertory Theatre and performed for such audiences as the United Nations, members of the U.S. Congress, and the Supreme Court of Nepal. Her other theater honors include a Helen Hayes Award, a Theatre World Special Award, and HBO’s US Comedy Arts Festival’s Best One Person Show Award. Her television and film credits include Spike Lee’s Bamboozled and the documentary Good Hair. As a narrator, she was among the cast for American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition by Neil Gaiman, which was a finalist for the prestigious Audie Award in 2012 in two categories, Fiction and Audiobook of the Year Award. A regular guest on public radio, she has also made TV appearances on HBO, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, and CNN and in her own special, The Sarah Jones Show, on Bravo. She lives in New York.
