For FBI special agent Smoky Barrett, the wedding of one of the Bureau’s own was cause for celebration. Until a woman staggered down the aisle, incoherent, emaciated, head shaved, and wearing only a white nightgown. No one knows who she is or where she’s come from — or why she’s chosen to appear in a church filled with law enforcement agents. Then a finger-print check determines that the woman has been missing for nearly eight years — that once she was someone’s wife, someone’s mother . . . and a cop. Imprisoning her in a dark cell, depriving her of any contact with the outside world, her enigmatic captor was a man she didn’t know and who seldom spoke, who punished her only when she failed to follow his most basic instructions designed to keep her alive. Cold, businesslike, seemingly indifferent to his victims, he’s a predator with an M.O. as terrifyingly inscrutable as any Smoky has ever encountered. As she fits together the pieces of what remains of his victim’s fractured life, a chilling picture emerges of a killer every bit as calculating, masterful, and professional as Smoky and the team she leads — a psychopath who doesn’t take murder personally and never makes a mistake. There’s a reason he let one of his victims go free. And by the time Smoky pierces the darkness of his twisted mind, it may cost her more than she can bear to lose to escape. For a trap snapped closed the moment she took this case too much to heart.

"I picked this book up on the new shelf of the library not realizing that it is the 4th in a series about a beautiful and courageous scarred senior FBI agent and they call her Smokey. I almost laid it down because right from the start it was a lot "darker" thriller that I like to read. I immediately liked Cody Macfayen's writing style and continued on to read it in two days. Anyone who loves really good scary thrillers I recommend this book." — Judi/Judith (5 out of 5 stars)

" Great character/storyline about a hunter of serial killers, I shouldn't have started in the middle of a series though. "
" One of the scariest, darkest series I have ever read. I am sorry to see it end. *shiver* "
" Not for the faint of heart! But very good! "
" There are some very bad people loose in our world, and Mr. McFayden describes them too clearly. There is too much graphic everything in this book for me to read another of his. "
" Loved the characters but the book dragged in the middle. Did have a few surprises.. "
" Slow to start even though only limited characters, picked up pace & delivered the can't stop reading about two thirds through. "
" I love these books. I can't wait for more! "
" Good CSI-like thriller. Slightly predictable, but engaging. Discovered there are 3 books before this one with the same FBI agent character, Smoky Barrett. "
" i give him lots of credit for not writing the same book over and over. and i look forward to the cast of characters changing. "
" A truly unique plot for a mystery, though the author got very wordy at times. "
" SO bummed to be done with this new, entrapping, skillfully crafted series :( I ploughed through the first 3 like there was no tomorrow and savored the final book. Bring on more, please! "
" its okay. reminded me more of a CSI episode then a book. "
" Hated it. Smoky Barrett is a whiner. Couldn't finish. "
" Good book. Was a tad disappointed with the identity of the killer. "
" A fun read but nothing that lasted with me. "
" You can read my thoughts here. "
" I did like this book but it was a little gruesome and I had to skip to the end. I did like it though. "
" 4th in the Smokey Barret series and McFadyen's best so far - I had to stay awake until midnight to finish it. So much that we can relate to in choices we make and how not to swim too far out to that lighthouse and lose our sense of right and wrong. A little less gory but easily as gripping. "
" Didn't read past the nasty first page. "
" Abandoned was a good mystery. You will never figure out "who dun it" because you never meet the killer. The ending was a bit anticlimactic. I found myself saying "HUH" The action u to the ending was very interesting and made me keep wanting to find out the ending. But... "
" Besides the over dramatic sad events for the main lead, the plot is really good but the book kinda bore me that I had to skip a few pages to get to the good part. I do like the book and the story. "
" Disappointment. Should have stopped after the first two, they were beyond fanominal. "
" This was a fantastic book. Extremely dark and gory though. Stay away if thrillers featuring serial killers bother you. But if you like that type of novel, this is one of the best I have read in a long time. I am definitely searching out more books by this author. "
" omg this was great, too bad i finished the series! "
" I didn't see that coming. And when you get right down to it, isn't that what we're all looking for in a mystery or thriller? "
" Meine Meinung: Wieder einmal ein schönes, spannendes Buch von Cody McFadyen. Habe es auch diesmal wieder sehr genossen, sehr sehr spannend bis zum Schluss mit einem überraschendem Ende. "
" I'm torn between 1 star or 2 - we listened to it - and it kept our attention on a trip - definitely not my taste. "
" Ein gutes Buch, die Storyline fesselt und zieht sich auch nicht. SPOILER: Die Babysache war komisch, ich mag solche Gedankensachen nicht "
" Love the intensity of the story. I hated that I had to stop reading and lead a normal life. This is the last the the Smoky series, but I want more! "
" I am listening to this book on audio and gave up. Everyone who touches the main character, including a girl of 10, is a victim or witness of rape or/and severe mutilation. That much evil touching that many lives is too much. "
