Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982) was a Russian-American novelist, philosopher, and screenwriter. She is best-known for her two influential novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism. Rand's first major success as a writer came with The Fountainhead in 1943, a romantic and philosophical novel that eventually became a worldwide success. It was eventually also made into a movie. Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, was considered Rand's best work. It is a novel of the morality of rational self-interest. In this public lecture, she criticizes altruism and mysticism as incompatible with business.

"This is quite a find -- something that, to my knowledge, even many Lovecraft scholars have not exhumed or commented on (to the extent they even knew of its existence). If I may say so, Lovecraft would not have been the best narrator of his stories, his voice being a bit too high in the register. Nevertheless, it's fascinating to hear the man's voice, and to listen to him opine on some fundamental subjects. My one reservation is the price --- $12.95, though hardly exorbitant for a novel or anthology, is rather excessive for a 4-minute snippet. Clearly the piece targets the true Lovecraft enthusiast and not the mere dilettante. Caveat emptor! "

H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant twentieth-century authors in his genre. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he lived most of his life. His relatively small corpus of work consists of three short novels and about sixty short stories.
