Publisher Description

Eighteen months ago, Aleut Kate Shugak quit her job investigating sex crimes for the Anchorage DA’s office and retreated to her father’s homestead in a national park in the interior of Alaska. But the world has a way of beating a path to her door, however remote. In the middle of one of the bitterest Decembers in recent memory ex-boss — and ex-lover — Jack Morgan shows up with an FBI agent in tow. A Park ranger with powerful relatives is missing, and now the investigator Jack sent in to look for him is missing, too. Reluctantly, Kate, along with Mutt, her half-wolf, half-husky sidekick, leaves her wilderness refuge to follow a frozen trail through the Park, twenty thousand square miles of mountain and tundra sparsely populated with hunters, fishermen, trappers, mushers, pilots and homesteaders. Her formidable grandmother and Native chief, Ekaterina Shugak, is — for reasons of her own — against Kate’s investigation; her cousin, Martin, may be Kate’s prime suspect; and the local trooper, Jim Chopin, is more interested in Kate than in her investigation. In the end, the sanctuary she sought after five and a half years in the urban jungles may prove more lethal than anything she left behind in the city streets of Anchorage.

"Excellent Mystery. Kate is Detective that can't get away from her past--following a horrible investigation of a child molester gone life alteringly wrong, she lives by herself in her Alaskan, Aleut home. But her old boss Jack Morgan snowmobiles in to ask for her help on a missing ranger case, no one knows the territory like Kate as she grew up here and is related to most of the Park. This story introduces a culture I was unfamiliar with and I so enjoyed learning about it through Kate's eyes. Really interesting characters, written with an air of mystery through out--the perfect mystery and perfect beginning to a series."

" First of the Kate Shugak series (which is now up to 15 and counting). It's a good series, based in Alaska, and evoking the wildness of the wilderness. Decent crime mysteries. The heroine is a native Alaskan who returned to 'the Park' after working for the DAs office in Ancorage and is now its unofficial private detective. "

Her grandmother wants her to become more involved in Indian affairs but Kate is resisting. A former detective for the DA, she now freelances. She is asked to help out when a man goes missing in the park and the officer sent in to find him goes missing as well. She must come to grips with the fact that she knows the killer personally. " This was a freebie on the author's website, and while I did enjoy it, sort of, it felt a bit underdeveloped to me. Fun to read something set in Alaska, but not very satisfying either as a mystery or as social commentary. Doubt I'd read more about this heroine. "
