In Thailand, two men hire a pair of international pirates to smuggle them, a small team of mercenaries, and some equipment aboard a freighter at a Russian port. It's frighteningly easy, and the ship sails east, toward the western coast of North America. In Washington, D.C., a CIA analyst has been hearing rumors about the sale of radioactive material and military equipment on the black market in deep Russia but can't get it confirmed. The analyst, Hugh Rincon, originally from Alaska and more keenly aware than most in Washington of Alaska's vulnerability with its air force base and proximity to the Far East, begins to piece it all together. He can't get anyone to take him seriously, however, least of all the director of the CIA. Then Hugh learns that his estranged wife, Sarah Lange, is second in command on the Sojourner Truth in the Bering Sea at the heart of the potential conflict. And the chase is on. The first stand-alone thriller from the pen of Dana Stabenow, Edgar® Award-winning author of seventeen crime novels, delivers a nail-biting, action-packed read, international in scope and chillingly real.

"A little slow starting, but really good story of an CIA/Coast Guard collaboration to thwart an attack on the U.S. in Alaska, but the head of the CIA doesn't believe it, so a husband/wife team are on their own. I plan to read more books by Dana Stabenow."

" I prefer the Kate Shugak books. This was a competent thriller. Highlights include the details about Coast Guard operations, some entertaining digs at intelligence inefficiencies/bureaucracy, and Arlene. "
— Sarah, 2/16/2014" Good mystery for a day off or to take along when traveling. Built around the fears and tensions of our post-9/11 world, the story involves a complicated plan to launch a dirty bomb, the lone CIA agent who figures things out but can't get anyone to believe him, and the crew of a Coast Guard cutter that is the only thing between the terrorists and their target. Oh yeah, and one of the officers on the cutter is the estranged wife of the CIA guy, just for good measure. It starts out a little slow as the various plot threads get established, but builds to a dramatic finish on stormy seas. A fun read for a lazy afternoon. "
— Kathy, 2/7/2014" This is my first time reading this author. I thought the beginning of this book started real slow for me. I was on board about midway through though and enjoyed the ending! A nice quick read to pass away the rainy weekend! "
— BranDee, 2/1/2014" Taut thriller, with the Coast Guard in the forefront. Sara lange and Hugh Rincon were in Prepared for Rage, but I don't remember exactly how. Riveting story of being on a Coast Guard cutter out of Alaska, boarding other ships and fighting against international terrorism. Life in the cutter explained really well. Stabenow deliberately let the reader think that both Koreans and crews were loaded onto the same ship. Confusing later to find out there were two. "
— Pbwritr, 1/29/2014" Spies, terrorist and Dirk Pitt like hers. Not my sort of novel. Stopped after 6 chapters. "
