Publisher Description

Survivor, genius, critic.

Murderer.

Meet Benjamin Davids White, blessed since his infancy with an extraordinary gift: to understand humor at its deepest level. Yet Benjamin is cursed, too. In all his life, he has never laughed or smiled. At the height of his profession as a comedy critic, yet lacking any kind of human empathy, Benjamin discovers a formula that will allow him to construct the most powerful joke the world has ever known. A joke that has the power to kill.

“To those of us who have been cheered and, crucially, amused by Kane’s way with words on stage, by his quicksilver linguistic invention and spry wit, the book offers further evidence of his uncommon talent. It has an inspired premise, a pacy narrative, and much very funny prose…Comparisons to Martin Amis and Will Self don’t feel too wide of the mark.”

— Telegraph (London)

Quotes

  • “Russell Kane is a death defier, the sort of comedian who won’t let a moment pass without filling it with laughter.”

    — Zadie Smith, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Orange Prize
  • “Every comedian wants to deliver the punchline to end all punchlines, and in this slick, viscerally nasty book, award-winning stand-up Kane does just that.”

    — Guardian (London)

" I struggled with this. I love Russell Kane as a stand up, but found this book to be hugely pretentious, like he wanted us to know that he knows big words and philosophy. Shame, because I really wanted to like it. "

About Russell Kane

Russell Kane is the author of The Humorist. When working as head of copy at an ad agency, a colleague suggested stand-up comedy as a way of letting off steam and creative juice in the evening. Within two years, he had left the world of advertising to become a professional comedian and won last year’s Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show, the most prestigious prize in UK comedy.
