It’s been several months since Lina and Doon escaped the dying city of Ember and, along with the rest of their people, joined the town of Sparks. Now, struggling through the harsh winter aboveground, they find an unusual book. Torn up and missing most of its pages, it alludes to a mysterious device from before the Disaster, which they believe is still in Ember. Together, Lina and Doon must go back underground to retrieve what was lost and bring light to a dark world.
In the fourth Book of Ember, bestselling author Jeanne DuPrau juxtaposes yet another action-packed adventure with powerful themes about hope, learning, and the search for truth.

"The final installment of the City of Ember series. Lina and Doon head back to Ember for supplies as the city of Sparks in barely able to make it through the winter with the extra people from Ember. Also another mystery from the last 8 pages of a book that Doon got ahold of talks about things he and Lina don't understand, but are sure it solves the future's problem of lack of electricity. Good finish to the series."
— Vicki (4 out of 5 stars)
An electric debut. Lina and Doon’ search parallels the universal adolescent quest for answers.
— Publishers Weekly, Starred" This was the final installation of the Ember series, and while it was not as good as the original book (City of Ember), it was also not as bad as the third book (Prophet of Yonwood). This book just didn't have the same magical quality that the original story had, so I wasn't enthralled. Overall, satisfying end to the series but not great literature. "
— Chris, 2/20/2014" This was a good ending to this series. I like these characters and it's nice to see them come full circle. "
— Brandee, 2/8/2014" I love this book series, a nice young adult series that made a pretty good story. I think there were way more places to go with it, I don't like how she just wrote in some epilogues without leaving herself room for more of the story but I'm assuming she was just done with Lina and Doon. Too bad, I liked them. "
— Amanda, 2/5/2014" This was pretty good. It's the fourth in a series. I loved the first one. The second 2 not so much. This is in-between. The same kids as in the first book, after emerging from the underground city, find some technology left for them and have to figure out how it works. "
— Tara, 2/4/2014" The beginning was kinda slow - mainly because this is the 4th book in a series and new readers needed to be introduced to the characters first and put up to date shortly on what happened before to the people of Ember. Then there was an adventurous part that would have deserved 5 stars. The ending was a bit lame again though. So 4 stars altogether. "
— Lioba, 1/19/2014" it was amazing it had spence thirlls and advencher it in my opinion it was the best of the books of ember I would remcond this book to aneyone. I lernd that if you stick together you get more saccomplicled "
— Richard, 1/15/2014" Mildly interesting and entertaining. Again, I would skip Book #3 in this series. "
— Chelsea, 1/4/2014" So here we get back to the story. I was kinda sick of the whole thing by this point so I didn't like this book as much and therefore the 3 stars on all of them. "
— Mylinda, 11/26/2013" I adore this series. I was sad to finish it! "
— Sally, 11/15/2013" This book beats all of them:) it was filled with so much supense i didnt want to finish reading but honestly i HAD to finish reading.... and the endiing was satisfying. "
— Hannah, 11/7/2013" This is an amazing series closer. I really liked this book and loved the ending. I wish there was more!!! I love this series and this is my favorite genre. Survival. Amazing read. "

— Nathaniel, 11/17/2012" This book was awsm and it really concludes the series well and they are all grrrrreat pardon me. The story is really good but for u cheaters out there read the first book first. I think thats y its called the first book in the series. :p "
— Isaac, 11/6/2012" Better than book3 but still too many inconsistencies. "
— Wendy, 4/6/2012" The best book in the Ember series since the first book. Really provides a good payoff to the second book, The People of Sparks and also ties in a bit with the third book. A must read if you enjoyed City of Ember. "
— Mr., 1/22/2012" LOVE LOVE!!! So awesome how at the end of the story it tells a bit about the future. "
— Wisegirl, 11/8/2011" A nice conclusion to the series! I want a "diamond" now! :-) "
— Heather, 8/19/2011" The first two were definitely the best of the series. The 3rd was unnecessary. This one tied things up but wasn't spectacular. "
— Peggy, 6/5/2011" A bit of the same premise as the first two, but still an enjoyable read. "
— Verity, 5/24/2011" So here we get back to the story. I was kinda sick of the whole thing by this point so I didn't like this book as much and therefore the 3 stars on all of them. "
— Mylinda, 5/11/2011" Okay, 2.5 stars; it's half a star not as meh as the previous three. Until the last chapter, which is just....oy. But great because I'm DONE a very mediocre series. "
— Rebecca, 5/2/2011" Makes you consider the importance to society at large the principles of forgiveness and just doing what's right. "
— Mellissa, 4/18/2011" A really cool book! Can't belive it's the last City of Ember book, but at least a good book to end the series! "
— ?Stephanie, 4/17/2011" I thought it was a fitting end to the series. I still think the first book was the best. "
— Michael, 4/15/2011" A really great ending to the series! "
— Michelle, 4/13/2011" I really liked this series. This was the 3rd book in the City of Ember series. It wrapped up the story very nicely. It is a thought-provoking series that I would encourage my students (and adults) to read. "
— Wynter, 4/7/2011" A quick read. Not as good as Sparks, but better than Prophet. "
— Teresa, 4/7/2011" Fun conclusion to the Ember series "
— Heather, 4/3/2011" This was my favorite of the series. I really enjoyed the ending and wrapping everything up -- not just the immediate future, but the farther-out future too. An interesting series of books. At times a little too political/opinionated on certain things, but overall a great idea for a series. "
— Erika, 4/1/2011" Interesting end to the series. It helps tie the prequel back to the first two novels, and has a little twist. "
