Publisher Description

The child's diary that awakened the conscience of the world When Zlata’s Diary was first published at the height of the Bosnian conflict, it became an international bestseller and was compared to The Diary of Anne Frank, both for the freshness of its voice and the grimness of the world it describes. It begins as the day-to-day record of the life of a typical eleven-year-old girl, preoccupied by piano lessons and birthday parties. But as war engulfs Sarajevo, Zlata Filipovic becomes a witness to food shortages and the deaths of friends and learns to wait out bombardments in a neighbor’s cellar. Yet throughout she remains courageous and observant. The result is a book that has the power to move and instruct readers a world away.

"Amazing real-time collection of daily atmosphere from a hopeful, scared, angry, frustrated 11-year-old girl. It makes one wonder, will we ever learn from historical mistakes?"

" I loved this book when I was a kid. Zlata is compared to Anne Frank a lot, but personally I don't think they were/are anything alike except that they both lived through a war. As a kid I found Zlata's voice very real and genuine and my heart went out to her. I think this is a good book for younguns to have. "

" While most of us weren't around when WWII occured, we can certainly remember the war in Sarajevo and it is for this reason I feel that Zlata's Diary has such a powerful impact with people today. "

" This is definitely a child's view of war, and interesting as such, but there is so little context that I wondered what 10th grade students would get out of it (we are considering it for next year's curriculum). "

" Another book about a child's perspective in a war-torn country. Although written 15 years ago it could still be applicable to many children in many countries today. "

" I was not a big fanof this book. I found it Very one sided and really uneducated. I'm her age so I know it's not that she's younger or anything like that. I found it boring and would read it as a space filler but not for entertanment. "

" It's amazing how similar she is to children in America. I read this because they talked a lot about it in The Freedom Writers. Because she's in a war it's a lot of the same things everyday...hunger, no electricity, shelling, boredom. So sad that this happened to such a beautiful city so soon after the world had just been there for the Olympics. "

" The story of War has been captured in a simple way. A child's world and life during war. The obvious terror of strife is portrayed in a girls facile words. "

" A young girl's account of her life in war-torn Yugoslavia is marked as similiar to Anne Frank's, but not quite. It is a moving account. But she is not as introspective as Anne Frank was, no surprise since she is much younger, so it is not as moving. "
