"So this guy is the one who runs polyface farm that was made famous in The Omnivore's Dilemma. Though not as good a writer as Polan, he does elaborate on many of his ideas here, as well as taking a very entrerpreneurial approach to farming. I read this while working in a little rural town in Nebraska, where all the nurses were married to farmers and were chagrined to see this city guy reading a book about how to succeed in a farming enterprise, when they has spent their lives hearing about how hard it was to make a living from farming. Salatin in pretty forthright that you have to treat it as a business, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your values."

" i don't usually add gardening/farm book here because i read so many. But this one, well it really is inspiring. And makes me feel my dreams are not so outrageous and may in fact be possible. Mostly though, I'm amused that I would take advice from someone who doesn't believe in evolution. "

" Nice philosophical overview of how to approach farming. No specific how-to info, but nice concepts. "

" Very interesting and encouraging overview of the business of farming - not the how to of the land (although there is some of that) but how to market and think about the business model in order to not go into debt before creating a product etc. Quite sensible and not a little eye-opening. Those wanting to implement Polyface's specific livestock practices will have to supplement with Salad Bar Beef and Pastured Poultry Profits. "

" Sure, a good book for wannabe farmers, I'm kind of different though. All sorts of good info though, from how to do pastured poultry to how to file tons of information! Oh, and sexist. Joel never hires women and you can tell by his abundant use of the pronoun 'he' when talking about farmers. "
