Publisher Description

Women In Love studies the nature of relationships between men and women through four very different characters, each of whom seeks fulfilment in their own way. Gudrun seeks an intellectual equal, while for Ursula, overwhelming love is all that will suffice; Gerald attempts to fill his emotional void with success and physicality, whereas Birkin desires total commitment from both his lover and his friend. Lawrence uses the foursome to form a complex emotional web, voicing his own views through the semi-autobiographical figure of Birkin.

"I can understand why some people don't like this book, or DH Lawrence in general - this book set expectations early on that it might be a nice, turn of the century love story. I had to think about this book for a long time after reading it before I truly realized the sheer genius of it, even if it wasn't one of my favorites. However, Lawrence is able to penetrate and reveal the deepest parts of ourselves; more specifically, the parts of the personality that are revealed when one is in love. It may not be a satisfying read, and it took some effort to get all the way through, but in retrospect it was worth the read. Having read this, no doubt I'll pick up my other Lawrence novels and read them as well."

" Nobody can articulate the psychology of love like D.H. Lawrence. It's quite incredible. Just don't read it for plot, though there is a surprise at the end. "

" DH Lawrence doesn't hold anything back, which makes him worth the effort. His commitment to exploring every last molecule of his characters inner lives - and to describing their physical surroundings in great detail - gives this book its crazy momentum. It's a really strange novel, with some truly awful, Mills and Boon style passages, but the insights are in there somewhere, and there is absolutely nothing dogmatic or schematic about it, just outpouring after outpouring... and then more outpouring. " I read WIL awhile ago. It's perhaps a reflection of DH Lawrence that I cannot really remember that much about it. All the details are mushing together just like The Rainbow--which I read in a hurry for college. Some beautiful writing but apparently not enough to stick in my brain. "

" Not an easy read but not because of the writing. The characters aren't particularly likeable and their negativity and disillusionment doesn't come across as well as the "lost generation" of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. That said, Lawrence's writing is at times very beautiful. "
