High in the Transylvanian woods, at the castle Piscul Draculi, live five daughters and their doting father. It’s an idyllic life for Jena, the second eldest, who spends her time exploring the mysterious forest with her constant companion, a most unusual frog. But best by far is the castle’s hidden portal, known only to the sisters. Every Full Moon, they alone can pass through it into the enchanted world of the Other Kingdom. There they dance through the night with the fey creatures of this magical realm.

But their peace is shattered when Father falls ill and must go to the southern parts to recover, for that is when cousin Cezar arrives. Though he’s there to help the girls survive the brutal winter, Jena suspects he has darker motives in store. Meanwhile, Jena’s sister has fallen in love with a dangerous creature of the Other Kingdom—an impossible union it’s up to Jena to stop.

When Cezar’s grip of power begins to tighten, at stake is everything Jena loves: her home, her family, and the Other Kingdom she has come to cherish. To save her world, Jena will be tested in ways she can’t imagine—tests of trust, strength, and true love.

" 3.5 stars. A lot of the things I love about Marillier are present in this book, but it didn't quite have the depth of her adult series. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Marjorie | 2/11/2014

" This was a nice escape read. It reminded me too much of a cross between the 12 Dancing Princesses, and the Frog Prince. But it was a good story "

" This is my new favorite book! I loved it and listening to it made it even better. I kept envisioning how this would make a wonderful movie! It's got everything! Fairy Tale characters and vampires, Oh, MY! Just read it! "

" An excellent intertwining of fairy tales. I was frustrated with the main character at times, but I think I was supposed to be. This is a great addition to the current flood of retellings. "

" I will read anything with a KY Craft cover because she is an artistic genius. Alas, I think I almost liked the cover better than the story in Wildwood Dancing. I loved the Transylvanian setting, the twist on vampires, and the mixing of familiar fairy tales - the frog prince and twelve dancing princesses. I wanted to love this book, but I just liked it. I chafed so much under the oppression of the vile Cesar that I had to skim his parts, and the liberation couldn't come soon enough. I also think he didn't quite get the come-uppance he deserved. I wanted to love the fairy world, but I found it too sinister to enjoy. "

" story starts before Cybele's Secret and it is really a cliff hanger. Great book of fantasy. "

" This novel has a great twist on The Frog Prince and The Twelve Dancing Princesses stories. Jena's best friend is a frog that when finally kissed with love becomes her prince. There was romance, fantasy, strong women characters, and good story telling. It was also obvious Marillier had done her homework and really knew about Transylvania and the culture and customs of the country. The only part I didn't like was the reference to vampires. I could have done without that. I am so tired of hearing about vampires. Other than that, I thought this was a great novel that I plan to go out and buy. I look forward to reading other novels in the series. "

" One of the most beautiful fairy tales I've ever read. Very dreamy and soft, gorgeous, the second book is almost as good. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Anna | 11/10/2013

" I thouroughly enjoyed this story. Ms. Marillier tied in several fairy tales to create a spellbinding tale, set in the magically rich history of Transylvania. "

" Had I read this as a kid, I believe my rating would have been 4 or even 5 stars. Loved the fantasy element, and the true love theme. However, as an adult the story seemed to drag quite a bit and I was able to guess most of the plot twists :( "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Karen | 10/29/2013

" This is a wonderful take on the "12 Princesses Dancing" fairy tale with a little "Frog Prince" thrown in for good measure. It is a great story with real people who are easy to like. "

" Who would have thought that the mixing of 12 Dancing Princesses, Princess and the Frog, and vampires would result in such a captivating story. I could have done without many of the Cezar/Jenica argument scenes, but otherwise very well executed. "

" The story of a girl and her sisters who have access to the other realms and whose lives become tangled up with this parallel universe. The highest praise I can give a book is to buy the sequel/companion novel, which I did with this one. It was the best historical fantasy I've read in a long time. "
