White Horse is a unique postapocalyptic thriller chronicling one woman's quest to nurture those she holds dear against the backdrop of a shocking new world.
Thirty-year-old Zoe wants to go back to college. That's why she cleans cages and floors at Pope Pharmaceuticals. If she can keep her head down, do her job, and avoid naming the mice, she'll be fine. Her life is calm, maybe even boring—until the end of the world, that is, when the president of the United States announces that humans are no longer a viable species.
Zoe starts running the moment she realizes everyone she loves is gone. Her boyfriend Nick, fearing he's contracted the virus, leaves for Greece. When Zoe discovers she's pregnant—and entirely alone—she treks across the world to find Nick and reunite her growing family. On the way she encounters characters both needy and nefarious—some human, some monster, and some uncertain beings altered by genetic mutation—and comes to see that humanity is defined not by genetic code but by soulful actions and choices.
Told in alternating before and after chapters, White Horse is a terrifying and romantic story that readers will be unable to put down.

"I almost put this book down in the first few chapters because it was going back and forth between Then and Now, which I usually find to be very annoying. I am sure glad that I hung in there because the story picked up for me right away and then it was hard to put down. Excellent Debut novel, kudos Ms. Adams, I really look forward to the rest of the trilogy!"

“Suspenseful, fast-paced, and boasting solid character development, this is a much better than average postapocalyptic novel.“
— Booklist“Readers have gleefully suffered through the End of Days in a good many apocalyptic novels in recent years…What debut novelist Adams brings to the scene in a planned trilogy is an unhinged but disquietly clear perspective on survivor’s guilt and the grimy nature of humanity…Adams ramps up our end days in an increasingly horrifying amplification of events…With uncommon confidence, Adams flips back and forth between the present day and Zoe’s life before…Adams has an excellent sense of timing, delivering gasp-inducing moments that punctuate her nightmare with verve. But it’s Zoe’s clear-eyed sense of self-preservation that will keep readers waiting for Adams’ follow-up. The novel relies heavily on biblical and Greek myths to welcome readers to Zoe’s nightmare, but it’s a small price to pay for the jolt.”
— Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“White Horse…is written with such skill and confidence that it sits easily in the pantheon of postapocalyptic thrillers alongside the likes of Justin Cronin and Stephen King…The first installment in a bold new trilogy, White Horse is the perfect start to a series that promises to both terrify and thrill.”
— BookPage“Adams’ fantasy is brilliant! It’s McCarthy’s The Road on hope steroids. Adams’ narrative is the prose of the world’s destruction, beautiful yet horrible. Her amazing characters are full of both hope and hopelessness in the face of death—and worse. This is what apocalyptic fiction will aspire to be from now on.”
— RT Book Reviews" The Road meets Contagion...beautiful, terrifying prose. Kinda makes me want to stock up on canned foods and face masks... "
— Olivia, 2/13/2014" I loved the way this book expertly weaved biblical references and greek mythology into the fabric of the story. Usually when I read books that draw from greek mythology, I find it clunky and obvious and feel it doesn't work very well, however this text does it beautifully and I greatly commend the author for her work. "
— Meg, 1/12/2014" Distopian novel - moved a little slowly for me - not my favorite but a decent read if you like the genre. "
— Sarah, 1/6/2014" Good book - suspenseful however sometimes the writing is so poetic it's hard to actually follow what happened. The plot is an interesting thought provoking one. "
— Laurie, 12/21/2013" I read this in one sitting. Great read! "
— Avril, 11/26/2013" Such an amazing book. I often guess the ending before I get there buy this book threw me for a loop!! I wanna read it all over again. "
— Joanne, 9/20/2013" I did enjoy this book. It has an apocolyptic theme. Although that is not my favorite type of book, I found it easy to follow, because it had sections clearly labeled..Here..and Now. I could follow the story. It also has a surprise ending. The author did a nice job wrapping up the story. "
— Twila, 8/25/2013" I cannot put into words how much I adore this story. So, in simple words: I loved it! "
— Jezka, 8/21/2013" Loved every moment of this book! Couldn't put it down. "
— Jennifer, 7/13/2013" Disturbing and seriously depressive. Adams is an excellent story teller and the twist is brilliant. "
— Lavinia, 7/6/2013" Wow... After so much death I'm actually relieved that there was a happy ending! Everyone died... I didn't know who to cry for at the end... I bet the Swiss never died... But what the hell is with him?! Weird person... Just putting it out there... "
— Georgia, 5/29/2013" Received as an ARC from the publisher. Started it on 2-2-12. Finished 2-5-12. Loved it. A post-apocalyptic adventure told in a unique "Time: Then" and "Time:Now" alternation. Brilliant writing; not a wasted word. "
— David, 4/9/2013" Interesting theory, but a slow moving book. "
— Ree, 4/5/2013" Different. Slow getting into, the end was the best. It was OK. don't know if I will get the next one or not. "
— T., 1/27/2013" Could not put this down! A post-apocalyptic quest story quasi-romance thriller from the first-person voice of Zoe, a thirty-year old tough-ass heroine who believes that one must retain one's humanity in the face of the apocalypse. "
