Benny Poteat is a tower jockey. Working hundreds of feet in the air repairing tension lines and replacing burnt-out light bulbs, he observes the world from above. He has seen a lot of things from his vantage point, but nothing can compare to the day he watches a woman die. She approaches the river that snakes far below him, sets up a video camera, and walks into the rushing water, never to reappear. Startled, he hurries down the tower to the scene of her death. What he does next will forever alter the course of his life. He does nothing. He gathers the girl’s belongings and doesnt tell a soul about what he saw.

Listener Opinions

" Not for the faint hearted! At times a difficult read in terms of the extent to which the witnessing of a suicide pushes the main character towards cruel, voyeuristic and abusive acts. "

" Titel en achterflap maakten heel erg nieuwsgierig, maar de stijl is niet echt soepel en het kost te veel moeite er door heen te komen. Geeft wel mooi beeld van de onderkant van de Amerikaanse samenleving. Ook knap om zo'n onsympathieke hoofdpersoon te maken. "

" The premise of this book is oddly fascinating, but I can't say that I loved the book. The ending wasn't very satisfying, and the main character sank to new lows every other page. Wouldn't read it again. "

" An intriguing plot, and somewhat disturbing. A lot of reviews I read were appalled by the behavior of the main character, but I appreciated how realistic it was. People can be jerks after all. "
