Publisher Description

Hailed as Charlotte Brontë's finest novel by Virginia Woolf, Villette is the timeless semi-autobiographical tale of Lucy Snowe. Left with no family and no money, Lucy goes against her own timid nature and travels to the small city of Villette, France, where she becomes a school teacher in Madame Beck's school for girls. During her stay, she falls in love twice and discovers an independent, inner strength rarely seen in women of her time.

"I enjoyed Lucy's character and the atmosphere of the town and school were great. Of course the author's dislike of anything NOT English/Anglican, and her Francophobia, are very pronounced, but I have yet to see a 19th century book which would not display this kind of attitude toward things foreign."

" Good story, but it definitely one for bilingual: French/English speakers. Much of the conversation is in French and it's not unimportant conversation. I read it with Google translator up the entire time. :D "

" I love Villette! I think this book is Charlotte's Best. Words cannot express how it has affected me! I was literally depressed/dumbfounded after finishing it. This should be a famous book, with so much mystery. "

" Long book. But worth it. I did not spend as much time with it as was required to truly appreciate it. This is a good candidate for a book that needs to be read twice. "

" This is not your typical Victorian novel. The author gives us much more insight into the interior life of the heroine, in a way that seems more modern than Victorian. There are many excellent review of this book out there already, so I will leave mine at "highly recommended." "

" Loved this book, but then I'm a Jane Austen fan too! The story doesn't move very fast, but the author is forgiven because I enjoyed the 1853-language so much! sample: "...the whole of my patience is now spun off the distaff" (spindle) I can relate to that! "
