Publisher Description

Venetia Lanyon, beautiful, intelligent and independent woman, lives in comfortable seclusion in rural Yorkshire with her precocious brother Aubrey. Her future seems safe and predictable: either marriage to the respectable but dull Edward Yardley, or a life of peaceful spinsterhood. But when she meets the dashing, dangerous rake Lord Damerel, her well-ordered life is turned upside down, and she embarks upon a relationship with him that scandalizes and horrifies the whole community. Has she found her soul-mate, or is she playing with fire?

"Venetia is a superb character, a free-thinking and independent girl in an age where unmarried females were supposed to be shy and quiet. Venetia is 25, and finds herself charmed by Damerel, a rather promiscuous man some years older. There are some delightful conversations and realistic settings, with a most satisfactory ending. Excellent. One of Heyer's very best. Thoroughly enjoyable even after the sixth re-reading in 25 years."

" Enough already! We get the point that Damerel is a rake. Do we have to be reminded of it every third or fourth page? Frequent references to sleeping around smack of pride rather than shame about what he has done. Venetia is elated when she finally gets engaged to the amoral womanizer. I wanted to gag. This is the last Georgette Heyer book I will read. "
