Taking the position of mayor in the town of Tilling brings much delight to Lucia. However, with her local rival Miss Mapp around, trouble is never far away. Lucia is elevated to her new position with Georgie Pilson as her sidekick, confidant, and escort. Lucia and Georgie renew their acquaintance with the opera diva Olga Braceley and the composer Cortese, but nobody in Tilling believes Lucia when she claims to have entertained a duchess.

"I am devastated to be finished with this series. I tried reading a little of The Freaks of Mayfair, but couldn't stick with it and ended up reading only the chapters that were character sketches of the characters in the Lucia series. My book world feels empty."

" A fantastic ending to this under-celebrated series. I see lots of rereads in my future. Even though these are set in a bucolic English village, they are wicked and stylish. "

" I think E.F. Benson must have been running out of steam with this one. Just not as good as his other Lucia books, although there were some amusing episodes. "

" I'd actually give this 3 1/2 if I could. I love this Mapp and Lucia series and was sorry to read the last of it. One is convinced, though, that life in Tilling goes on even when you close the book. "

" Lucia has had a couple books to be in the ascendant, and in this one it's her to be taken down a peg or two (which she richly deserves). But no fear! In the end, it all comes right for her again! "
