Even while the brewing Civil War threatened to tear the country in half North from South, the race was on to bind the country together East to West by railroad. This was a race by daring men and bold women, partnered in a dream and divided by their unchecked obsessions. They would fight the elements, the Indians, and each other on the way to riches and glory. They would conquer greed, treachery, scandal, and only their untamed passion - like a runaway train - could smash the dream before a single spike was driven into the ground. " The dialogue was pretty choppy and mechanical, so I gave it 3 stars. Still, the backdrop of the Grand Canyon and its time period (1870-1920) makes it worth reading. It begins with Powell's first expedition through and ends with the Grand Canyon Lodge and El Tovar. "
