Publisher Description

Forced to stay with his childless aunt and uncle for the summer holidays, Tom is lonely and cross. There isn't even a garden to play in. But when he creeps down at midnight and opens a certain door, there is the garden he longs for. There too is Hatty, the adventurous, lonely orphan who, like the garden itself, is touched by mystery. Why is one day summer, another sparkling winter?

Will Tom ever meet Hatty in daytime life? And can Tom find the answers to these questions before he must go home? Read by Jan Francis

"Tom has to stay with his aunt and uncle while his brother has the measles. When the clock in their flat strikes 13 he discovers a garden and a young girl who needs a friend. The novel is a kind of puzzle and it's an engaging one too. It's a lovely story and a fast read."

" This book gave me the same feel as Tuck Everlasting. It's a good story and interesting but when you're finished you're left feeling sad. I really did enjoy it but I am not cut out for time travel YA/children's book, lol. Too sad. "

" I enjoyed how this book morphed while I was reading it. At first I thought it was going to be another "Secret Garden". Then I thought it was turning into a sort of ghost story. By the end it proved to be something totally different. There's a bit of mystery, a bit of fantasy, a lovely Victorian element and a unique relationship that unfolds in both worlds of fantasy and reality between the main characters Tom and Hattie. This book was delightful and charming and deserved to win the prize and the designation as a Modern Classic. "

" Good bedtime book to read aloud. Boy and girl main characters. Streampunkish since just at the edge of Victorian era - at least the night part - mated with time travel lite. "

" Actually, I studied it for school; I guess it's pretty nice. Got a bit of magic in it, and is, all in all, a pretty decent book. I read it before school actually began; wanted to judge it myself, because once school starts they'll make it as boring as can be. "

" I loved this charming story. It is in the children's book section of the Folio Society books that I am always tempted by. It has an almost spiritual feeling in some parts of it. It reminded me a bit of George MacDonald's books. "
